MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx review – a 17-inch gaming notebook that weighs a touch over 2 kilos

As its name suggests, the MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx is a relatively thin and light gaming notebook, that won’t completely destroy your bank account. Unlike, the GS Stealth series, it is one of the company’s most affordable offerings, which actually features very capable hardware.

This year, the GF75 Thin comes with the 10th Gen Intel processors, maxing out with the Core i7-10750H. Ultimately, you can go for the Geforce RTX 2060, if you need more graphics power, or if you’re on a tight budget, you have the option of the GTX 1650. Additionally, you can pick a 144Hz 1080p IPS display, and you will end up with a notebook that really doesn’t correspond to its pricing. In a good way, of course.

Tous MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx configurations

#CommissionsEarned

What’s in the box?

Inside the package, we found a 180W power brick (you’ll get a 150W unit if you get the GTX 1650 or GTX 1650 Ti), some paper manuals, as well as a bracket, and some screws for installing a 2.5-inch SATA drive.

Design and construction

What do you expect to get from a relatively budget offering? Plastic? Sure did we, as well. However, the GF75 Thin 10Sx has an aluminum base and lid cover, resulting in a very premium feel. Overall, this 17-inch beast is actually very thin and light, considering its form factor. It weighs only 2.30 kg for the most powerful configuration, and the profile goes from 22-23.1mm. Keep in mind that the aluminum surface here is covered in smudges after no more than 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, the lid won’t let you open it with a single hand. Interestingly, though, after you open it, the lid lifts up the backside of the base, and the laptop gets significantly better airflow.

However, you need to get way past the 90-degrees angle for the base to actually lift up, which can be a bit uncomfortable on some occasions. Also, the top-most part of the base bends like crazy when you press on it.

As you can see MSI has pulled the keyboard closer to the user but was still able to put the touchpad beneath it. This leaves a huge deal of extra space above the board, so you can put some appetizers there to keep your energy levels high during long gaming sessions.

By the way, the keyboard, itself, is not bad. It has a NumberPad with half-sized keys, while the key travel is actually decent. Also, the feedback is tactile, but very quiet as well. On the downside, the Arrow keys are just crammed into the rest of the keyboard, which meant that every now and then we would click the “Enter” key instead of the “Up” arrow one, leading to starting a campaign, instead of a benchmark in some of the games we tested.

And while the touchpad is pretty responsive, it is a bit small and too close to the edge of the machine. Also, expect some keyboard deck flex, but nothing to worry about when you’re gaming.

If you turn the laptop around, you will see the ventilation cutouts, which cover a large area. In addition to that, there are the speaker grills. Interestingly, this laptop has four exhaust vents – two on the back, and one on each side, with the former two firing hot air towards the display. We’re not sure if this is going to result in issues with the screen down the road, but it’s still worth noting.

Ports

On the left side of the notebook, you will find the charging plug, followed by an HDMI connector, and two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports. Switch sides, and you can see the RJ-45 connector, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, followed by a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, two audio jacks, and a security wedge.

Display quality

MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx is equipped with a Full HD 144Hz IPS panel, model number AUO B173HAN04.9 (AUO978F). Its diagonal is 17.3″ (43.94 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 127 ppi, and a pitch of 0.2 х 0.2 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 69cm (27″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop).

Viewing angles are comfortable. We offer images at 45° to evaluate image quality.

The measured maximum brightness of 281 nits in the middle of the screen and 272 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 7%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen is 6220K – slightly warmer than the optimal for the sRGB standard of 6500K.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. In other words, the leakage of light from the light source.

Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work. The contrast ratio is good – 1220:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people in HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers only 50% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976.

Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.

Below you can compare the scores of MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale, and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 25 ms.

PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

The backlight of the MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx doesn’t use PWM to adjust its levels of brightness. This means the display is comfortable for use, without presenting any excessive eye strain in this aspect.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin, and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusion

MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx’s display has a 144Hz IPS panel with Full HD resolution, good contrast ratio, and comfortable viewing angles. It also doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. On the downside, the panel covers only 50% of the sRGB color gamut, and despite its fast refresh rate, has slow response times, which results in a ghosting effect.

Temperatures and comfort

Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

It is clear that MSI is pushing the Core i7-10750H to its maximum potential for this cooling solution. Actually, the cooling design only sends the heat to one of the fans (via two heat pipes and two heat sinks, which may be one of the reasons why the temperature, in the end, turns out to be so high.

Even when the MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx uses its full cooling capabilities, it runs too hot. The GTX 1660 Ti with its 80W TGP, reaches temperatures of 86C after half an hour of gaming.

Gaming comfort

You can definitely fry an egg on the area above the keyboard. Thankfully, though, the keyboard, itself, remains relatively cool during gaming, so kudos to MSI for bringing it downwards. And as for noise – the laptop is not too loud for a gaming machine.

Verdict

If we have to be honest, it is great to have a 17-inch 144Hz display on your laptop. Especially, when the device only weighs 2.30 kg. For comparison, the Dell G7 17 7700 stops the scales at 3.30 kg.

Well, we have a thing or two to say about the screen though. MSI GF75 Thin 10Sx’s display has a 144Hz IPS panel (AUO B173HAN04.9 (AUO978F)) with Full HD resolution, good contrast ratio, and comfortable viewing angles. It also doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. On the downside, the panel covers only 50% of the sRGB color gamut, and despite its fast refresh rate, has slow response times, which results in a ghosting effect.

When it comes to the pure gaming experience, the laptop is good enough. It provides high frequencies from its GPU, which sadly results in a very high temperature – both inside and out. Well, the fans are clearly not spinning up to their full potential, which is good for noise, but definitely not good for temperature management.

Also, the notebook lacks an SD card reader, which is petty, but at least it catches up on I/O. Not only that, but you can also upgrade your memory up to 64GB, and for storage, you get one M.2 PCIe/SATA combo slot, and a 2.5″ SATA drive bay. Although, keep in mind that the laptop comes with a seal on one of its screws, so some you might end up voiding your warranty in some regions.

Additionally, don’t expect any braveries from the tiny 51Wh battery pack, as we hardly got more than 5 hours of use, even under the slightest load like Web browsing and watching HD videos.

At the end of the day, if you have a bit more cash to spend on an HP Omen 15 (15-ek0000), or if you want to keep the price down – even the ASUS TUF A17 (FA706) is a better choice.

Pros

  • Supports up to 64GB of DDR4 memory
  • Optional RGB backlight (for the RTX 2060 model)
  • Lack of PWM (AUO B173HAN04.9)
  • Comfortable viewing angles and good contrast ratio (AUO B173HAN04.9)

Cons

  • Lacks an SD card reader
  • Slow response times, despite the 144Hz refresh rate (AUO B173HAN04.9)
  • Covers only 50% of sRGB (AUO B173HAN04.7)
  • Gets a bit warm during gaming

This is an amazing laptop which oozes of raw gaming performance. I absolutely love its brush aluminium build coupled with a gorgeous 17.3 inch screen was fast refresh rate. The cooling is great and mu CPU, GPU temps are 75 degrees and 70 degrees celsius while gaming with Cooler Boost on. Also there is zero thermal throttling and both processor and gpu run at max possible clockspeeds. The speakers are loud and crisp especially when tuned with bundled Nahimic software. Overall a bang for buck laptop. Recommended to evryone who is looking for ultimate gaming performance!!
