LG 34WP65C-B monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: We Made It 2X More Accurate, Great for Designers and Video Editors

This might be the best monitor for the Venn diagram that represents gamers and content creators. The LG 34WP65C-B monitor brings insane specs and features all for a pretty decent price. It puts it in the mid-range of gaming monitors, however, LG has done a very good job, so it feels like you’re getting a lot more for your money. We’ve seen what Samsung can offer with its Odyssey G5 series, and from first glance, this LG screen will blow it out of the water with its color coverage and more importantly, color accuracy.

The monitor offers a 34-inch curved VA panel with a resolution of 3440 x 1440p, which is called UltraWide Quad HD. The big screen means superb immersion, as well as great detail, thanks to all the pixels. There’s also a 160Hz refresh rate, a decent 5ms response time, as well as AMD FreeSync Premium support, so overall use of the monitor feels smooth, responsive, and Tear-free, both in gaming and in media consumption. As you’ll see while reading on, it’s also an excellent option for content creators and designers, especially once we include our Display Profiles.

Drivers and Software

All the download files that you’ll need are found on LG’s Support website. From there, you can find the manuals, as well as drivers, firmware, and the LG OnScreenControl software, which allows you to adjust monitor settings without the OSD menu, as well as create layouts for multitasking.

Design and Connectivity

The monitor has a pretty simple design, with a long and narrow base, which gets the job done when it comes to supporting the monitor’s weight, as it’s not the lightest, due to its size, weighing 5.8 kg, increasing to 7.7 kg with the stand. The whole chassis is made of plastic and the look is modern. The stand, while looking basic, offers decent adjustments, with both Tilt and Height Adjustment, which is super helpful for getting the monitor as close to eye-level as possible. A wall mount option is also possible, as there are 100 x 100 mm VESA holes on the back. On the back, you can find the buttons for the OSD menu. We almost forgot to mention the stereo speakers which are built into the monitor. The setup is pretty powerful, consisting of two 7W units that produce very decent audio.

As with most LG TVs and monitors, the ports are flat on the back. Here, we find two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort, and an audio jack.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The LG 34WP65C-B brings a 34-inch UltraWide Quad HD screen (3440 x 1440p), which calculates to a pixel density of 109.68 PPI, a pitch of 0.2316 x 0.2316 mm, and a Retina distance of 31.34 inches or 79.60 cm. From this distance, the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 6300 K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of LG 34WP65C-B can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

LG 34WP65C-B: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 98% of the sRGB color gamut and 89% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1) LG 34WP65C-B covers 98% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the LG 34WP65C-B tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the LG 34WP65C-B. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the LG 34WP65C-B, the Average color accuracy was 2.6 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 1.3 dE (Fig. 3). The monitor became 2X More Accurate, so now it’s perfectly usable for any type of design work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The LG 34WP65C-B is simply a great monitor, having all the features to be great for gamers and content creators. Starting with the design, it’s simple, modern, and functional. The stand offers pretty decent adjustments, and while the port selection can use some USB ports to make it appeal to the productivity freaks, the package currently is very good for the price.

It’s great for gaming, as the curve, high resolution, and the curved form factor means you get a detailed and immersive image. Moreover, with the 160Hz refresh rate and the AMD FreeSync Premium support, you get smooth and tear-free gaming. Now, let’s get into the creator world, where the monitor shines as bright as ever. First of all, the monitor shows 98% sRGB and 89% DCI-P3 coverage, producing a bright, punchy, and vibrant image. With our Display Profiles, you can make it even better. Our Web Design and Office Work profile makes the monitor TWO TIMES MORE ACCURATE, from a base dE value of 2.6 to a dE value of 1.3.

The rest of our profiles are pretty amazing too, as our Gaming and Movies profile levels out the black colors, so darker scenes in movies and games look better. Lastly, the Health-Guard keeps the Blue Light emissions and the PWM (Flickering) under check.
