Acer Aspire 5 (A514-53) vs Acer Aspire 5 (A514-52/G) – Ice Lake therapy for the newer one
The Acer Aspire 5 (A514-53) isn’t a device that you’re going to fall in love with it from first sight. However, it’s an affordable machine that has to the job in every situation without stretching your wallet too much. Maybe that’s why Acer didn’t improve the design of this machine. It has the same one as last year’s model – an all-plastic build with nothing special when it comes to the exterior.
The biggest difference is hidden inside – the new model comes with 10th gen Intel CPUs and this is its biggest (perhaps the only one) improvement over the older variant.

Design: nothing new
Well, as we said, nothing new. Just look at the picture below – twins. The bezels around the display aren’t very thick and the machine doesn’t look too dated in 2020. It is a standard laptop, nothing more nothing less. Dimensions-wise, no improvements too – the weight is 1.7kg which is a bit heavy for a 14-incher, and profile is 17.9mm which is 0.1mm slimmer than the A514-52 variant.

Display: 14″ IPS panel
The bezels aren’t changed as well as the dimensions – it looks like Acer’s “new” laptop also uses a 14″ IPS display with 1080p resolution – just like its older sibling. We can’t moan here, for a budget device that will do the job, at least it has decent viewing angles.

Hardware: Intel Ice Lake inside with Intel UHD G1 Graphics
Finally, something new. The 2020 model can be configured with either the Intel Core i5-1035G1 or the Core i3-1005G1. Both are 10th gen Ice Lake CPUs with a 10nm manufacturing process and lower power consumption than the previous-gen 14nm CPUs. You can also rely on the Intel UHD G1 graphics (with 32 EUs), which is very similar to the UHD 620. For comparison, the last-year models came equipped with 14nm Whiskey Lake processors.
Connectivity and ports: essentials only
The ports selection is not bad – three USB 3.0 (Type-A), one USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen 2), an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an audio combo jack.
Other specs: Wi-Fi 6 and the same keyboard unit on board
Just like the older model, Bluetooth 5.0 is available in the A514-53 as well. Acer has decided to keep the same keyboard unit that lacks the NumPad section and it has half-sized arrows keys. At least you can take advantage of faster wireless connection thanks to the 802.11ax standard.
