[Comparison] Intel Core i9-12900H vs Core i7-12700H – Same platform, different names

Intel is up to some trickery again, this time making consumers pay extra for essentially the same CPU. The Core i9-12900H should be decently ahead specs-wise over the Core i7-12700H.

However, when looking at them, they share the same number of performance and efficiency cores, along with the same cache size and integrated GPU. Let’s see how they stack up against each other, as currently, it would be a dumb idea to go for a Core i9.

CPU benchmarks

The Core i9 CPU is 9% ahead in 3D Rendering, while the Photoshop scores were identical.


Conclusion

For some reason, the Core i9-12900H is quicker in 3D Rendering, despite the two CPUs sharing the same platform. Intel might be doing something with the power management, allowing the higher-tier processor to access more power, which will lead to higher clock speeds and more performance. Still, you have to ask yourself if you want to pay a premium price for the Core i9 nameplate, because for us, the Core i7 is enough for whatever work you would want to do.
