Intel Core i9-8950HK vs AMD Ryzen 7 1700 – benchmarks and performance comparison

The new Intel Core i9-8950HK suitable for high-end gaming laptops and working stations was just announced and we can’t wait to see how it stands out compared to the competition. Therefore, we chose for it a worthy rival – the AMD Ryzen 7 1700, so today’s article is dedicated to a brief comparison between the two processors.

Visit our Top Laptop CPU Ranking to check these two and many more CPUs.

Specs overview

The latest addition to the 8th generation Intel Core i9 mobile processors – the Intel Core i9-8950HK is based on the Coffee Lake-H architecture featuring a total of 6 cores and 12 threads. Manufactured through a 14 nm process, it supports the HyperThreading technology thanks to which the processor is able to execute 12 sets of instructions at the same time. As for speeds, the new CPU reaches base frequencies of up to 2.9 GHz and a 4.8 GHz turbo speed. The specs sheet is complemented by 2 MB L3, dual-channel DDR4-2666 RAM, and 45 W TDP.

Now let’s take a look at its competitor – the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 which currently takes the first place in our Top Laptop CPU Ranking. This high-end desktop-grade CPU has also been implemented in gaming notebooks due to its relatively low TDP of 65W and decent thermals. Based on AMD’s new Zen architecture, the chip is manufactured through a 14nm node and features 8 cores with 16 threads. In addition, the base clock speed can reach up to 3.7 GHz (3.75 GHz with XFR feature (Extended Frequency Range)), while the maximum Turbo Clock speed is specified as 3.2 GHz. The memory controller supports 64GB of memory clocked at 1833 MHz or 32GB of DDR4-2400 or 2660 memory.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

Results are from the Fritz chess benchmark (the higher the score, the better)

Judging by the charts above, the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 in ASUS ROG GL702ZC shows better performance with around 36% when it comes to 3D rendering (tested with Cinebench 15). However, things change in the Adobe Photoshop test, as well as raw synthetic benchmarks (tested with Fritz) in which the Intel Core i9-8950HK found in the Intel Core i9-8950HK Prototype laptop exceeds its opponent by around 36% and 17% respectively.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that the two processors we compared today deliver top-notch performance, but if we have to name a winner it would be the Intel Core representative. However, you should also consider taking into consideration other criteria such as price, battery life, and GPU performance based on your priorities.

I’m sorry but can you not read or not understand the article?..In this scenario yeah ryzen is faster than i9. I mean of course it is that ryzen chip is a full fat desktop class cpu while that i9 is even less performing than desktop i7 8700k.
