MSI GF63 Thin 10Sx vs MSI GF63 8Rx / 9Sx – budget machine but still up to date

Gaming laptop on a budget – this is what best describes the MSI GF63 Thin 10Sx. This isn’t a shiny machine with high-end hardware. Instead, inside of it, you’ll find what can be described as pure mid-range gaming equipment. There is nothing bad in it because the main purpose of this laptop is to cost less and it must do the job in every kind of situation.

Expectedly, the new version is updated with refreshed CPU options from Intel (Comet Lake-H), there are new graphics card variants, and we spot some new displays – it looks like that’s all. For a not-so-expensive machine, the new hardware is enough to make it competitive.

Design: compact 15-incher

Expectedly, no visual changes and it’s not a needed thing since it’s one of the most affordable MSI machines. On the bright side, this laptop still looks fine, especially for a budget machine. In terms of measurements, the device still fares well in 2020 – 21.7 mm profile and a weight of 1.86 kg.

Display: plenty of panel options for a budget laptop

Three display options are more than enough for this laptop. We start with a regular 60Hz panel that is the default budget choice. The next one is a 120Hz display which seems fine for most gamers but if it isn’t enough for your needs, a 144Hz display variant is available for configuring.

Hardware: Comet Lake-H CPUs with up to 6 cores and Max-Q GPUs from NVIDIA

CPU-wise, you can pick your machine with Intel Comet lake-H processors. These are refreshed Coffee Lake CPUs with bumped clocks and some additional tweaks as well. The Intel Core i5-10300H suits well to this laptop because it doesn’t cost that much and at the same time its performance is still decent for an inexpensive machine. If you want to turn this device into something more powerful, there is a 6-core CPU variant – the Core i7-10750H.

As for the graphics options, at least for now, you can choose between the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q and GTX 1650 Max-Q. By the way, the most powerful MSI GF63 Thin 10Sx looks fine for normal gaming – i7-10750H, GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q, and 144Hz screen. Not bad.

Connectivity and ports: standard I/O for the GF series

The port selection of the MSI GF63 Thin 10Sx is almost the same as the larger GF laptops – a USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-C) port, three USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A) ports, an RJ45 port, an HDMI connector, a headphone jack, and a mic-in jack.

Storage and other specs: two storage slots, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and single-color backlit keyboard

Two NVMe slots sound really good when you can find them in such a budget device like this machine. One of the M.2s is a combo slot so you can install a slower (and cheaper) SATA drive as well. We also spot two keyboard options – a single-color backlight unit and a “Full-Size Keyboard” that probably has no backlight. Like most of the this year’s notebooks, the MSI GF63 Thin 10Sx has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 for connectivity options.
