Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 (16″, 2023) review – a better, slightly more expensive version of the IdeaPad Slim 3

Design and construction

Ultimately, this laptop will always come with an aluminum lid. The base, however, can be either plastic or aluminum. Our configuration has an all-metal design, and we are really happy with its rigidity.

Well, at least with the one of the base, because the lid is still a bit flexy. In addition, the metal unit is 16.9mm thick, while the plastic one is 17.9mm. On the other hand, both models weigh 1.89 kg, which is pretty fine for a 16-inch notebook in this class.

Unlike the IdeaPad Slim 3, this one’s lid opens with one hand. Its bezels are pretty slim with the top one featuring a Full HD Web camera with a privacy shutter and an optional IR face recognition scanner.

Moving to the base, we see the speaker grill, joined by the power button. The keyboard itself has a backlight, a NumberPad section, as well as a pretty comfortable typing experience. While the key travel is a bit average, the feedback each key provides is really clicky and pleasant.

As you can see, there is a fingerprint reader located in what can best be described as no man’s land. On its left side, you will find the rather standard Mylar touchpad, with a size of 75 by 120 mm.

Then, on the bottom panel, you can see the ventilation grill. This is where the laptop draws its cool air from. Hot air, respectively, is being exhausted through a vent in between the base and the lid.

Ports

On the left side, there is a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, an HDMI 1.4 connector, another USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port, and an Audio jack. Both USB Type-C ports support Power Delivery 3.0, and DisplayPort 1.4 output. Then, on the right, you get two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports and a MicroSD card slot.
