Lenovo LOQ (15″ Intel, 2023) review – low price, high performance

Design and construction

As expected, the grey body of this machine is entirely made out of plastic. Although there is some flex in both the lid and the chassis, we are pretty happy with the rigidity of the product.

In terms of dimensions, the machine weighs 2.40 kg and has a profile of 22.1-25.2mm. At first, we thought that Lenovo has reused the body from the 16-inch model, but this one is specially built for the LOQ (15″ Intel, 2023), as it sports a slightly smaller footprint.

Thankfully, the lid can be opened with one hand. Its side bezels are slim, while the bottom one is quite substantial. In addition, the top one houses an HD Web camera or an optional Full HD shooter. If you look closely, you still won’t be able to see the privacy shutter. That’s because there is an electronic one, which is activated by a dedicated toggle switch on the right side of the base. In other words, once you click it, an icon will appear, indicating that your camera is disabled and it should read “Trust me bro”.

Moving to the base, we see that a quite substantial amount of the device is moved backward. Hopefully, this should bring most of the heating components towards the back, and away from your hands. In addition, the keyboard sports an optional 4-zone RGB backlight, a NumberPad, large Arrow keys, and good typing comfort. The last is thanks to the long key travel and the clicky feedback.

Now, it’s the touchpad’s turn. It is a relatively smooth unit. The surface is made out of Mylar and has a size of 75 by 120 mm. Other than that, the device is pretty responsive, and the tracking is accurate.

Next comes the bottom panel. It is home to the two speaker cutouts and the weirdly-shaped ventilation grill. Hot air, respectively, gets exhausted through two vents on the back, and one on either side of the laptop.

Ports

On the left side of the device, there is a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) with Power Delivery 140W and DisplayPort 1.4 capability, as well as an Audio jack. Then, on the right, you get a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) port and the aforementioned camera shutter. Lastly, all of the other I/O is located on the back. This includes two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports, a LAN port, an HDMI 2.1 connector, and the power plug.
