AMD Ryzen 5 3500U vs AMD Ryzen 7 2700U – benchmarks and performance comparison

In order to answer this question we’ve put side by side the Ryzen 5 of today versus the Ryzen 7 of yesterday. Both of them have similar features and use the same amount of wattage so let’s dig in the details.

Specs overview
As we mentioned they both use 15W of TDP and have a quad-core/octa-thread configuration. However, the Ryzen 5 3500U has a slightly lower Base and Boost frequencies than the Ryzen 7 2700U – 2.10-3.70 GHz vs 2.20-3.80 GHz. On the other side, the third generation Ryzen is manufactured on a 12nm process, which means it should produce less heat than its 14nm opponent. In addition to that, they are both equipped with 4MB of Cache and support dual-channel DDR4-2400MHz memory.
Last but not least, the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U uses the help of the Radeon RX Vega 8, while the Ryzen 7 2700U is equipped with the slightly more powerful Radeon RX Vega 10.

The difference between the two is incredibly small – less than 1% in favor of the Ryzen 5 3500U.
Conclusion
Since the margin between the two is that little, we are left with a tied result. However, it was to be expected, since the difference in their specifications is negligible. With that said, we would recommend the newer processor (Ryzen 5 3500U), since it is built on a lower manufacturing process, hence is going to produce less heat and use less energy. At the same time if you are needing that little extra graphical power of the Radeon RX Vega 10 over the Vega 8 – you can go for the Ryzen 7 2700U.
