[Comparison] NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (95W) vs RTX 2080 SUPER (150W) – the RTX 3080 is better, even with the lower power consumption and clock speeds
As more and more of the new Ampere RTX GPUs are dropping we have to compare them against each other and against the already established names in the scene. For today we have two high-end GPUs, the first of which is part of the newly released RTX 3000-series, the RTX 3080 (Laptop, 95W).
Its opponent is the already well known RTX 2080 SUPER (150W). Let’s see which GPU is better and how big the gap is between them if there even is one.

GPU benchmarks
In 3DMark Fire Strike, the newer RTX 3080 performed better, although not by a lot. The difference in scores was only 2%, which while isn’t much, shows the jump in performance from one generation to the next. You also have to keep in mind the lower power consumption on the RTX 3080, which once again shows how better the new Ampere architecture is.

Conclusion
The difference in performance, while being in the single-digit percentages, shows that the Ampere architecture is better, by 2% to be specific. The lower power consumption on the RTX 3080 doesn’t stop it from scoring higher than the RTX 2080 SUPER. You also need to recall the higher memory and core clock speeds on the RTX 2080 SUPER, that when paired with the higher power consumption allow it to reach those speeds faster and more often.
