NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are making tons of noise in the tech world. These next-generation GPUs are expected to be unveiled at Computex 2024, which will be held a month from now (4th June to 7th of June) in Taipei.

According to recent leaks, the top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 laptop GPUs will both come with 16GB VRAM (Video RAM). This means they’ll have a lot of memory to handle complex graphics tasks, making them suitable for the next generation of gaming laptops expected in 2025, and of course, for running local AI models.

We’ve seen games require more and more video memory, as resolutions and complexities of textures increase annually. NVIDIA’s current stock price surge is majorly thanks to its AI accelerators, so there are surely more improvements in the new 50 series for better local utilization of machine learning and AI.

The leaks also suggest that the GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU will have 12GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5060 laptop GPU will have 8GB of VRAM. This is an upgrade compared to the previous generation (the Ada Lovelace-based GeForce RTX 40 series), which had varying amounts of VRAM ranging from 6GB to 16GB for different models.

The new GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs are expected to use next-generation GDDR7 memory. This means they’ll not only have higher VRAM capacity but also faster speeds and better power efficiency, which is especially important for laptops.

Once NVIDIA releases all of its new Blackwell-based GeForce RTX 50 Laptop GPUs, we’ll be able to compare their VRAM capacities to those of the previous GeForce RTX 40 Laptop GPUs. This will give us a better idea of how much of an upgrade the new series is.
