Display Profiles for Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix – It Can Reach 4 Times Better, Studio-Level Color Accuracy!

Does bigger mean better? In terms of monitors, it most surely does, at least when everything else is balanced around it. In the case of Acer’s VG series of entry-level gaming monitors, we’ve seen the smallest, and now it’s time to see the biggest. Today we have the Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix, a 27-inch monitor with an IPS panel, which is good to see at lower price points. It’s also got an impressive (for a more affordable machine) 100Hz refresh rate, overshadowing the 75Hz that we saw in the smaller 22 and 24-inch VG monitors. There’s also a 1ms response time and AMD FreeSync support present.

However, today we’re here to assess its Creator capabilities, so think Color gamut, color accuracy, temperature, etc. With our Display Profiles, we’ll make sure you get the best colors possible, so you can take the Nitro VG270Ebmiix, game on it as much as you want, and create the content that you want, be it edit videos, make graphics, 3d models, color-correct photos, and anything else that requires accurate colors. The Design and Gaming profile makes its color accuracy 4 times better, reaching Delta = 1.0! In other words, colors become indistinguishable from the real ones.

Design and Connectivity

The Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix presents a classic gaming design for this monitor, from the Black and Red color scheme to the base and stand design, which are sharp and edgy, similar to pretty much all Nitro products, be it laptops, PCs, peripherals, and more. The bezels are thin, while the chin is slightly thicker and has a textured finish. In terms of adjustment, the stand doesn’t provide much except tilt, which you can use to get a better viewing angle and set it up depending on your height (We hope you’re sitting straight while reading this).

For ports, you have an HDMI 1.4 port, a VGA port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack, which isn’t much, however, you’ve got all the bases covered. Also, with the built-in speakers, you can forego buying an audio setup and just invest in a good pair of headphones.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

Acer advertises 99% sRGB coverage, however, it would be best if we checked this ourselves, and that’s what we did. We also gave the monitor’s accuracy a much-needed tune-up, and now we can proudly crown the Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix a great Creator monitor that you can get for a decent price. The better colors will also mean a more immersive gaming experience, especially with the high refresh rate, the bigger panel, and the swift response time.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, and digital cinema, and photo editing
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 95% of the sRGB gamut.

(Fig.1) Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix covers 100% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix  tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the one you’ll see on the Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix, the Average color accuracy was 4.1 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowers to 1.0 dE (Fig. 3), which is an immense accuracy increase, all the way from being unusable from Creator work, to being better than around half of the specialized Creator monitors. Values below 1.0 are indistinguishable by the human, so with our profile you’re basically standing on that edge, which is good.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The Acer Nitro VG270Ebmiix is the best of the budget VG-series gaming monitors, offering the highest refresh rate out of the bunch, along with a decent 1ms MPRT response time. The larger IPS panel is also more immersive, as you can get a bigger image. On the other hand, the Full HD resolution might make it so more detail-oriented consumers might start seeing individual pixels if they get up close.

However, for the price that Acer wants for the Nitro VG270Ebmiix, you get an unbelievably good Creator performance. Not only does the panel cover 95% of the sRGB color gamut, so content also looks vibrant and punchy but with our Display Profiles, all those colors become incredibly accurate, as we get a major increase in accuracy from 4.1 to 1.0, one of the highest jumps that we’ve seen. With it, the monitor is more accurate than a lot of dedicated studio monitors.
