[Preliminary] Apple M1 Max vs AMD Ryzen 7 5800H – similar raw performance

Continuing the coverage of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC’s, today we have the scores of the M1 Max going against the Ryzen 7 5800H. The Ryzen is a pretty capable chip, being able to handle loads of high-intensity tasks without breaking a sweat.

However, the M1 Max already did a number on the Core i7-11800H, which came out ahead of the Rzen 7 5800H when we tested them. Let’s see how it fares against the new M1 Max.

This comparison is preliminary, featuring results that aren’t our own. We will update this and other preliminary comparisons as soon as we get our hands on the new MacBook Pro 14 and Pro 16 and test them for ourselves.

Here is our Top Laptop CPU Ranking where you can find the best-performing CPUs for laptop devices.

 CPU benchmark

The M1 Max is so much faster in the Geekbench benchmarks, with score leads of 32% and 65% in Single-core and Multi-core, respectively.

However, Cinebench R23 is a more representative benchmark, when it comes to raw performance. Here we see an advantage for the M1 Max in terms of Single-Core performance. The Ryzen 7 5800H, on the other hand, wins the fight, when Multi-Core performance is in mind.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800H144513442 (+9%)

Conclusion

As of now, it looks like this new CPU is unstoppable when it comes to pure power. However, the fact is that these M1-based machines will suffer because of a lack of software support. Of course, this will get better as time goes on, but just in case, be careful and research if your software of choice is available and is well optimized. Nevertheless, despite the win of Ryzen 7 5800H in the Multi-Core Cinebench R23 test, we have to keep in mind that we are comparing a low-power chip with a pretty beefy setup, that requires a decent cooling solution. Once again, we will put these processors side by side in other benchmarks as soon as they are available to us.
