Samsung Galaxy J2 vs Galaxy J1 – quick comparison

At the end of August we introduced you to Samsung Galaxy J1 via our news stream and in-depth review of the model. The device is a low-class smartphone, boasting fairly good specs for its price. Now, however, there is a new device from Samsung’s J line – Galaxy J2, which is fastly gaining popularity on the worldwide market. We currently don’t have a hold of the device and we hope to get our hands on it soon, but this doesn’t stop us from comparing the two devices and see which one is the better budget Samsung phone.

Galaxy J2 is slightly bigger than Galaxy J1 and the reason for that is the larger 4.7-inch screen, compared to the 4.3-inch on J1. In order to keep the pixel density close to the first one, the resolution has been bumped to 540 x 960 (234 ppi). Another improvement over the predecessor is the presence of Super AMOLED panel in the display that will offer higher maximum brightness and contrast compared to the TFT screen on Galaxy J1. Even though Galaxy J2 is larger in size, its thickness hasn’t changed as much and even dropped to 8.4 mm, while the weight of the device is only 122 grams.

If the low RAM memory and not enough internal storage, 512MB and 4GB respectively, are some of Galaxy J1’s drawbacks, we can say that Galaxy J2 rights the wrongs in this department with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. We aren’t trying to say that Galaxy J2 is a top-tier smartphone or anything, just stating that its specs are now at par for its class. The newer model has also kept the microSD memory card slot, which supports up to 128GB. For Galaxy J1’s performance is responsible the not so popular Spreadtrum SoC, while in Galaxy J2 we find an Exynos chipset. It is the Exynos 3475, which boasts four Cortex-A7 cores, clocked at 1.3GHz, accompanied by the Mali-T720 GPU.

Judging only by the specs sheet, we don’t see any improvement in the cameras department. The rear unit is again 5MP with autofocus and LED flash, capable of recording 720p videos and the front one is 2MP.

The battery of Galaxy J2 has higher maximum capacity, compared to that of Galaxy J1, 2000mAh vs 1850 mAh respectively. However, the difference isn’t that big and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Galaxy J1 outperformed J2 in terms of battery life since it has a TFT display. On the other hand, the OS of Galaxy J2 is the newer and more optimized (Android 5.1.1 Lollipop), while the J1 runs on Android 4.4 KikKat.

You can compare both devices on the specs sheet below. To this moment we can’t offer any information about the capabilities of Galaxy J2, but if you are interested you can take a look at our Galaxy J1 review.
