ASUS ROG STRIX G15 – G512LI vs G512LU vs G512LV vs G512LW vs G512LWS – what are the differences?
Finally, the moment has come – ASUS has just unveiled their new mobile devices that feature new-gen CPUs alongside brand new NVIDIA RTX Super GPUs. Ok, let’s start with the ASUS ROG STRIX G15 lineup. Expectedly, we have a hardware update, the recognizable ASUS gamer-ish design, and the multifunctional ScreenPad that can turn into a standard TouchPad…or you can use it as a calculator, you can place icons into it – there are a lot of possibilities here.
The real deal is the new hardware specs. This year the new laptops are configurable with the latest Intel Comet Lake-H CPUs like the i7-10750H. This is a 6-core processor with 12 threads, 12MB cache size, and a hefty 45W TDP. Such a generous TDP means that the CPU frequencies will be much more consistent unlike the ULV ones, you can expect less throttling as well. The max Turbo Boost frequency looks impressive (5GHz) but it’s possible thanks to the “Thermal Velocity Boost” so you will take advantage of this sky-high clock only at lower loads and if the CPU temp is below 50°C (and this is just one core boost).

As you can see, there are five different models and the main difference between them is the video card that is fitted in every model. Let’s be more specific:
LI = 1650 Ti
LU = 1660 Ti
LV = RTX 2060
LW = RTX 2070
LWS = RTX 2070 SUPER
Yep, if you want to game on with the RTX 2070 SUPER you need to look for the LWS models. Speaking of the refreshed NVIDIA Super GPUs, the new ones come with a 12 nm FinFET tech process, higher shader count compared to the non-SUPER video cards – 2560 shaders for RTX 2070 Super. Goodies like DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and RTRT (Real-Time Ray Tracing) are part of the whole GPU package.

As for the screen, we have a 15-incher with a 144 Hz refresh rate. It’s an IPS panel so it will have good viewing angles and good quality is expected too (but as always, we have to test it first). Keep in mind that there will be an optional 240Hz display which is very appropriate for hardcore gamers that tend to play fast-paced shooters daily (or for Esports gaming too). Some other specs regarding the new machines – the battery is a 4-cell unit with a 66Wh capacity, there is an optional RGB backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6 is on board for faster transfer rates, and we have 1x USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen 2), as well as 3x USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen 2). There are SATA and NVMe storage options as well.
The dimensions are ok for notebooks with full-blown video cards. The profile is 25.8 mm and weight is 2.39 kg which is pretty acceptable.
At least on paper, these new fellas look really well and we are very impatient to test them.
