Dell Inspiron 15 5584 review – a multimedia solution which is still yet to impress

One of Dell’s strongest selling brands is certainly the Inspiron. While this family has a lot of members they are not afraid to introduce new ones and experiment with the numbers. This is how the Inspiron 15 5584 was born (or at least that’s how we imagine it was). It aims to be your multitasking friend for day-to-day use. Said with other words – a multimedia tank.

It features Intel’s latest Whiskey Lake CPUs and can be configured with NVIDIA GeForce MX130. This (and its price) makes it comparable to Lenovo’s Ideapad 330s (15″), ASUS VivoBook S15 S530 and Acer Aspire 5 (A515-52). Is Dell Inspiron 15 5584 special enough to battle these decent devices, or it’s gonna fall down on its knees?

What’s in the box?

Unamusing packaging here – just the laptop itself, the 65W power brick, some paperwork and that’s it. They have to keep the price down… right?

Design and construction

We are happy to see a sub 2 kg laptop here. In fact, the Inspiron 15 5584 weighs 1.95 kg and has a profile of 22 mm. It retains the build materials configuration of its predecessor – matte plastic on the outside and a fingerprint magnet piece of brushed aluminum serving as a base.

It’s impossible to open the lid of this device with a single hand. Either way, when you do manage to open it up, the hinges remain stable enough so there is no excessive wobble. In a closed position, however, the lid is pretty bendy and you have to forget of placing objects on top of it.

We’re happy to see a thin-bezel screen, although this is only valid for the side bezels of this laptop. Moving downwards shows us an improved keyboard – tactile feedback and long enough strokes make it comfortable and, on some occasions, pleasant for typing. There is a backlight option, but you still have to pay a premium to get it. We reckon that they’ve kept the touchpad the way it was, since it has a little rough surface and mushy keys, although it is super responsive.

Finally, there is the bottom plate, which houses a ventilation grill, the speakers and, weirdly enough, half of the exhaust cut-outs.

Ports

Here you’ll find everything you’re possibly gonna need for your multimedia excellence. On the overcrowded left side there is the charging plug, USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 1) (optional), an HDMI 1.4b and RJ-45 connectors as well as two USB Type-A 3.1 (Gen. 1) ports and a combo audio jack. When you turn the laptop on 180 degrees you are going to see a USB Type-A 2.0 port and an SD card reader.

Disassembly and upgrade options

Recently, Dell is making a good job with the way they design their devices, regarding the disassembly. As we saw on the Dell G5 15 5590 two of the screws are actually doubling as brackets, that frees up a certain part of the backplate. Additionally, there are 7 more Phillips-head screws to remove and then pry the plate up. This happens the easiest from where the two aforesaid screws let the bottom plate loose. After that, you need to open the laptop halfway there in order to access the other clips. After we get there we see a lot of free space inside – could have they made more use of this free space?

We think that the answer to this question is obvious, but we can focus our sight on another area – the cooling. As you can see from the image below, both chips are cooled by a single, rather bulky heat pipe – clearly not the best solution we’ve seen.

Just below the CPU are located both of the RAM DIMMs. They support up to 32GB of DDR4 memory.

Flanking the battery you can find the storage options. On the left is located the SATA connector, while the right side is home to the M.2 PCIex2 slot.

Last but not least, there is the battery pack. It comprises three cells with a total capacity of 42Wh – not very impressive, indeed.

Display quality

Dell Inspiron 15 5584’s display is equipped with Full HD IPS panel bearing a model number AUO B156HAN-1K1DG (AUO25ED). Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop).

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 has comfortable viewing angles. We offer images at 45° to evaluate image quality.

We measured a maximum brightness of 245 nits in the middle of the screen and 236 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of 8%. The Correlated Color Temperature on a white screen is 6480K – matching the optimal for the sRGB standard of 6500K. The average color temperature through the grey scale before profiling is even warmer – 6300K.
In the illustration below you can see how the display performs from a uniformity perspective. In other words, the leakage of light from the light source.

Values of dE2000 over 4.0 should not occur, and this parameter is one of the first you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color sensitive work. The contrast ratio is very good – 1450:1.

To make sure we are on the same page, we would like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB color gamut and the Adobe RGB. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity Diagram that represents the visible specter of colors by the human eye, giving you a better perception of the color gamut coverage and the color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you will see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that is being used by millions of people in HDTV and on the web. As for the Adobe RGB, this is used in professional cameras, monitors, etc for printing. Basically, colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream notebook.

Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

The yellow dotted line shows Dell Inspiron 15 5584’s color gamut coverage.

Its display covers only 53% of the sRGB/ITU-R BT.709 (web/HDTV standard) in CIE1976.

Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the accuracy of the display with 24 commonly used colors like light and dark human skin, blue sky, green grass, orange, etc. You can check out the results at factory condition and also, with the “Design and Gaming” profile.

Below you can compare the scores of Dell Inspiron 15 5584 with the default settings (left), and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The next figure shows how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings, while the right one is with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale and on the vertical axis – the luminance of the display. On the two graphs below you can easily check for yourself how your display handles the darkest nuances but keep in mind that this also depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle, and the surrounding light conditions.

Response time (Gaming capabilities)

We test the reaction time of the pixels with the usual “black-to-white” and “white-to-black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.

We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 29 ms.

PWM (Screen flickering)

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control monitor brightness. When you lower the brightness, the light intensity of the backlight is not lowered, but instead turned off and on by the electronics with a frequency indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light impulses, the light/no-light time ratio varies, while brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about that in our dedicated article on PWM.

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 doesn’t flicker at any brightness level. This makes it comfortable and safe for in this aspect use during long periods.

Blue light emissions

Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM but also reduces the harmful Blue Light emissions while keeping the colors of the screen perceptually accurate. If you’re not familiar with the Blue light, the TL;DR version is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin and your whole body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusion

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 has a budget Full HD IPS panel, which has comfortable angles, good contrast ratio, and non-flickering backlight. The only drawback here is the modest color coverage.

Sound

Inspiron 15 5584 produces a relatively loud sound. However, its low, mid and high tones have deviations.

Drivers

If you ever need to reinstall one or more of your drivers, or you just need to download a utility you don’t have, here is a link to the Inspiron 15 5584’s support page: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/inspiron-15-5584-laptop/drivers

Battery

Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. This laptop is equipped with a 42 Wh battery unit.

With the risk of stating the obvious, this battery is not one of the huge ones out there. What we mean by that is we’ve seen laptops with way smaller screens and bigger batteries. This, of course, results in average battery life – 6 hours of Web browsing and 5 hours and a half of video playback.

CPU options

Dell Inspiron 15 5584 can be bought with Intel Core i3-8145U (two cores/four threads), Intel Core i5-8265U (four cores/eight threads), Intel Core i7-8565U (four cores/eight threads).

GPU options

Dell offers you the option of a dedicated GPU – the NVIDIA GeForce MX130, which itself, is bound to the USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 1) port, meaning – no MX130, no Type-C. Otherwise, you can still go for the Intel UHD Graphics 620 that is integrated into the CPU.

Gaming tests

In titles like CS:GO and DOTA2, the MX130 is only slightly better than the integrated UHD 620. However, in more intensive games like the GTA V for example, MX130 proves to be of significant advantage.

Temperatures and comfort

Max CPU load

In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

Average core temperature (base frequency + X); CPU temp.

Inspiron 15 5584 starts off well in the torture test, reaching an impressive 2.92 GHz in the first checkpoint. However, this takes a toll at the temperature and almost immediately on fan noise. In fact, this laptop was equally loud during CPU and GPU benchmarking, meaning the cooling is not very well calculated. In order to decrease the temperature, the device had to throttle the frequencies down to 1.83 GHz with the fans never setting down for a rest.

Real gameplay

Dell Inspiron 14 5482 2-in-1993 MHz @ 69°C901 MHz @ 69°C

In the GPU department, we saw typical MX130 behavior. The junction point of 69C and finally balancing out at 901 MHz. However, the Inspiron 15 5584 was able to cool the GPU down to 3C less than the Inspiron 14 5482 2-in-1.

Gaming comfort

Frankly, the keyboard of this laptop warms up a little bit. However, it is nothing that cannot be handled by an average person. At the same time, the hottest spot we measured was between the “5” and “6” keys and was around 48.5C.

Verdict

At the end of the day, Dell Inspiron 15 5584 is a decent device. First of all, as a multimedia device, it provides you with everything you need – very good port selection, an IPS panel option (AUO B156HAN-1K1DG (AUO25ED), and on top of that – Whiskey Lake CPUs. At the same price point, however, there are some pretty strong competitors – the ThinkPad E590 being one of the most fierce, while looking super professional.

Speaking of the IPS panel, while it is certainly a budget one, it is still an IPS display and brings the mandatory perks of having a such – comfortable viewing angles and excellent contrast ratio. Additionally, it doesn’t use PWM to adjust its brightness level and the only drawback we saw was the modest color coverage.

Next things in line are the input devices – they are good enough (with the keyboard having a backlight option). Keystrokes are rather long and have that nice click to it, while the touchpad is super accurate but its surface is not very durable at all.

With that said it is time to mention some of the setbacks of this laptop – first of all it is loud. Not loud in a good way (the speakers) but loud because of fan noise. In fact, the fan is spinning absolutely always (except if you are located in the freezer) and even in day-to-day usage, it tends to get a little warm under the bonnet.

In addition to that, its build quality is not the best with the plastic around the body being susceptible to scratches and the base of the device being a huge fingerprint magnet. Add a not very persuasive battery life and there are strong prerequisites that are pushing us to recommend other devices – HP ProBook 450 G6 or even the Lenovo Ideapad 330s (15″). It has a lot of cheaper options and an IPS screen.

Pros

  • Decent input devices
  • Doesn’t use PWM to adjust screen brightness (AUO B156HAN-1K1DG (AUO25ED)
  • Whiskey Lake CPUs offer a good performance
  • Rich I/O selection

Cons

  • Narrow color coverage – 53% of sRGB (AUO B156HAN-1K1DG (AUO25ED)
  • Not a very good build quality
  • Mediocre battery life
  • Fans kick in during day-to-day tasks, and get really loud under load

Hi, from the video I saw a 2.5″ HDD bracket but not the SATA cable. Is it included in the packaging or should I purchase it separately?
