AORUS 17X vs AORUS 17 – same look, different heart

This year, the Aorus 17 series has two branches. One of them is a laptop that is slimmer and more compact, and that’s why it is limited to the Max-Q versions of the RTX 2080 Super and 2070 Super – that’s the Aorus 17G. The second one is the Aorus 17X – this laptop has the same thick profile and heavyweight chassis like last year, which enables Gigabyte to put a better cooling that can deal with the full-blown variants of the RTX 2080 Super and 2070 Super.

So, if you want a really fast laptop and you don’t plan to take it with you outside, the Aorus 17X can be equipped with the most powerful mobile GPU at the moment and you can go as high as Core i9-10980HK when configuring the CPU for your laptop. In short – top hardware fitted in a big body with a gaming look.

Design: thick and heavy but with a purpose

The Aorus 17X and Aorus 17 are real twins, they look the same and they have the same profile and weight – 38 mm and 3.75 kg. If these numbers are too much for you, there is the Aorus 17G that has a fit body, especially when compared to these two. But hey, the bezels are very thin (3mm) and that’s why the Aorus 17X still looks modern.

Display: 144Hz or 240Hz

Like many other high-end Aorus laptops, the 17X model has two display options that come factory calibrated with accurate and vivid colors – a 144Hz panel and a 240Hz unit. The latter is a great option if you play first-person shooters regularly but no matter the game you can always feel the difference between a 60Hz panel and a 240Hz one.

Hardware: Intel Core i9-10980HK and full-blown RTX 2080 Super

If you’re an overclocker maybe you can have fun with some of the few mobile chips that have unlocked CPU multiplier – the Core i9-10980HK. However, don’t forget the fact that this one is a really expensive option. There are two other CPU options, one 8-core, and one 6-core –  Core i7-10875H and i7-10750H. The thick profile is here for a reason (probably) – it houses a Vapor Chamber cooling (with 5 heat pipes) that is more capable than the one that is inside of the Aorus 17G and that’s why the 17X model can be equipped with the full-blown variants of the RTX 2080 and 2070 Super. The more “budget” options include the regular RTX 2070, RTX 2060, and GTX 1660 Ti.

Connectivity and ports: three sides populated with ports

The I/O is the same as the regular Aorus 17 – 3x USB 3.2 Gen1 (Type-A) ports, a USB3.2 Gen1 (Type-C) port, one USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, an HDMI 2.0 connector, a USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 1) port with DisplayPort output, an audio jack, a mic-in jack, an SD card reader, and an RJ-45 port.

Storage and other specs: NVMe and SATA ports, and mechanical keyboard with Omron switches

Just like the Aorus 17 and 17G, the 17X model has a keyboard unit that has OMRON mechanical switches. Gamers will be pleased with this one and thanks to the AORUS RGB Fusion 2.0 every keycap can be programmed individually to light up in a different color. Unlike some of the 2020 Aorus high-end devices, the Aorus 17X has a SATA port as well as two M.2 ports, thus enabling you to configure up to three storage drives at the same time.
