HP 240 G7 vs HP 240 G6 (2018) – the dark-themed G7 looks so good

The HP 240 series offers affordable devices that will do the job in every situation, of course with some compromise here and there but we can’t expect miracles for that price. The latest model – 240 G7 comes with more powerful CPU options, slightly updated design, and better portability. That’s all, for devices at this price range the new updated specs look good except the screen but we will discuss it a bit later.

    Let’s compare those two models.

Design: almost unchanged but the dark color looks good

No big changes in terms of design but for a low-cost machine, the 2019 variant is a good looker. The bezels are still not that slim but at least the weight is reduced as well as the profile (1.52 kg and 19.9 mm) and that means much-improved portability.

    Display: TN for all

For good or bad the good old 14″ TN panel with 768p resolution is here again. The only bright side is that a TN panel leads to a price reduction. The bad side – poor viewing angles, low sRGB color coverage, low contrast, and so on.

Hardware: Whiskey Lake power and DDR4 2400MHz memory

Yes, this is the biggest upgrade of the new model – you can configure the notebook with up to i5-8565U which is decent Whiskey Lake CPU with 4 cores and 8 threads. For example, the 2018 models can be ordered with outdated Kaby Lake processors only. The battery has the same capacity as the old model and it supports fast charging.

Connectivity and ports: goodbye optical drive and some essential port selection

The optical drive is gone which is good for weight reduction and cleaner exterior look. The port selection is just what you can expect from such an affordable device – two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A), one USB 2.0, an HDMI 1.4b, an Ethernet port, an audio combo jack (headphone/microphone), and an SD card reader.

    Other specs: Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.0

Unfortunately, the 240 G7 devices support Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 only (ergo, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are a no-go here). We can also spot an HD camera, TPM module, and a security lock slot.
