Intel Core i5-1035G4 vs i7-8650U – the new i5-1035G4 rocks

Ice Lake vs Kaby Lake R. This will be the battle of the generations. We have Intel Core i5-1035G4 (Ice Lake) and Intel Core i7-8650U (Kaby Lake R) for our comparison today. Almost two years between them – Kaby Lake R was launched in Q3’17. For the IT world, two years is a lot of time.

Intel is selling the i5-1035G4 for $309 and i7-8650U for $409. Exactly a $100 difference. Let’s see if is worth it the extra money.

    Quick Specs

So, in 2019 i5 CPUs like the i5-1035G4 got the same core count (4 core, 8 threads) as our two years old i7-8650U. That’s nice progress. But let’s continue with the other specs.

The frequencies of Core i7-8650U are a bit lower (1.10 GHz base frequency and 3.70 GHz boost) compared to i7-8650U’s 1.90 GHz to 4.20 GHz. The max memory size is double for the Core i5-1035G4 – 64 GB. Core i7-8650U is taking the lead with 8MB of cache while Core i5-1035G4 has 6MB cache.

The powerful Intel Iris Plus Graphics G4 is rocking inside the i5-1035G4 while i7-8650U is equipped with the much more ordinary UHD Graphics 620. The next one is the memory support – the Core i5-1035G4 is taking the ovations here with DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733, and DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133 “only” for i7-8650U.

Do we have a clear winner?

Yes, after everything we saw (specs and CPU performance) it’s clear like day and night. Core i5-1035G4 is packing a lot of cool features – enough core count for your basic everyday tasks such as web browsing and videos, much faster IGP (Iris Plus Graphics) – you can expect much better FPS in some popular light games like DOTA 2 and CS:GO compared to UHD Graphics 620.

Also, i5-1035G4 supports higher memory frequencies and got almost the same TDP levels (only the TDP down value is a bit higher than the one in the i7-8650U – 12W to 10W).

On top of that, Core i5-1035G4’s price is $100 lower so that’s a great offer!
