NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q vs GeForce GTX 1070 (Laptop) – gaming performance and benchmarks

The other day we compared the GTX 1080 Max-Q to the regular laptop version of the GTX 1080 and we were quite surprised by the results (you can read the full article here). It seems that the ROG Zephyrus is quite powerful despite its thin body and the GTX 1080 Max-Q isn’t much of a downgrade from the regular version.

Even though the Max-Q model proved itself as comparable to the traditional GTX 1080, we will still make a quick comparison with the GTX 1070 just to see how big of a difference there is.

Overview

There are quite a few differences in the specs of both cards. There are both based on the GP104 chip but the GTx 1070 features a bit cut-down version of it. It has fewer CUDA cores – 2560 vs 2048 – and slower memory. While they both feature 8 GB of VRAM, the GTX 1070 uses slower GDDR5 memory than the GDDR5X found in the GTX 1080 Max-Q. The memory of the GTX 1080 is clocked at 10000 MHz while the GTX 1070 is running at just 8000 MHz. Both cards have a 256-bit bus.

However, the GTX 1070 has a higher core clock. Its frequencies range from 1443 all the way up to 1645 MHz while the GTX 1080 Max-Q is clocked as following – 1101 (1290) MHz base and 1278 (1468) MHz boost.

The GTX 1080 Max-Q has a slightly lower power consumption even compared to the GTX 1070 (remember it was almost half the consumption of the regular GTX 1080) – 90 to 110W vs 115W.

Synthetic benchmarks

Quite interesting results – the GTX 1070 is no more than 10% below the GTX 1080 Max-Q in most cases which isn’t all that much. However, synthetic benchmarks are not always a good representation of real-life performance. We will check the gaming capabilities of both cards further down in the comparison.

Gaming performance

The GTX 1080 Max-Q is apparently just slightly better than the GTX 1070. It usually delivers just a few percent higher frame rates which translate into a couple of frames most of the time. However, there are some games where the difference is more noticeable (around 10%). Despite the overall better performance of the GTX 1080 Max-Q, both cards are perfectly capable of running your favorite games even at high graphics settings.

However, we should note that some very hardware-intense games like Tom Clancy’s The Division run considerably better on the GTX 1080 Max-Q.

Verdict

Overall, we are a bit surprised to see that the GTX 1070 did not give too much lead to the GTX 1080 Max-Q which on the other hand was pretty close to the regular laptop edition of the GTX 1080.

Both graphics cards are very good and are powerful enough to run every game even with high settings. You can expect a solid 60+ frame rate from any of the two. However, the GTX 1080 Max-Q has some of its perks. It has a slightly lower power consumption which might affect the battery life – for the better that is. It also features faster GDDR5X memory and more CUDA cores which as we saw increases the performance over the GTX 1070 both in synthetic benchmarks and in real-life gameplay.

Being a Max-Q design, the GTX 1080 has a 40 dB limit for the fan noise which would make the notebook a lot stealthier than most of the competition. At the end, both GPUs are awesome, however, we would recommend the GTX 1080 Max-Q. Our advice would be: your purchase should vary depending on the price.
