[38 Gaming tests and videos] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti vs GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q – a negligible difference

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is being around since 2017. That’s a lot of time for a mobile GPU but you can still find laptops configured with this video card on the market.

However, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti isn’t bad at all even by today’s standards for budget machines – it has 4GB of video RAM, its TGP is high enough (which means no heavy throttling if your notebook has good cooling), and the boost clock seems fine. The main drawback is power consumption, but don’t forget the fact that this graphics solution is almost 4 years old.

On the other hand, we have the GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q which is a much more modern GPU. And since it has been refreshed in 2020, we have a laptop sample configured with the refreshed GPU that has GDDR6 memory onboard. Based on our previous testing, we saw that these two GPUs aren’t too far away from each other so let’s check what is the exact difference between them in terms of pure performance.

    Specs overview

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is a Pascal GPU that has 768 shader units, 32 ROPs, and decent base and boost clocks – 1493 MHz and 1620 MHz respectively. This GPU uses the GP107 chip which is equipped with up to 4GB GDDR5 video memory, a 128-bit bus, and 7000 MHz frequency. The TDP is 75W, and this graphics card is a 14nm product.

The GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q is the new kid on the block and as we said, it has a GDDR6 refresh from this year. This is a Turing GPU bundled with a TU117 chip. You can find it with 896 or 1024 shaders and in terms of memory, there are variants with GDDR5 and a low-voltage GDDR6. The ROP count is the same as its opponent – 32, and the base and boost clock can be as high as 1020 MHz and 1245 MHz. In terms of memory, we have 4GB VRAM that is clocked at 8000 MHz but there are derivatives with 5000 MHz and 7000 MHz memory frequencies.

Our test GPU has 896 shaders and GDDR6 memory that is clocked at 5000 MHz.

    Verdict

Well, we can call that a tie result (almost). Thing is, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is still a decent GPU and if you own a laptop with this video card there is no point to upgrade to something with the GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q (if you care only about performance). As we said earlier, the main con of the Pascal contender is power consumption. A 75W TGP seems pretty high for today’s standards – for example, the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti is more powerful than the GTX 1050 Ti, but it has just 55W TGP. This means that the GTX 1050 Ti dissipates much more heat when compared to its modern rival.

In terms of noise, both test samples were noisy during gameplay so picking a laptop with a good cooling solution is always a good idea.

A few words regarding the GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q. Such a performance squeezed from just 35W TGP – not bad at all. In the meantime time, heat dissipation is on the low side which adds more comfort during gameplay. We’ve tested the version with 896 shaders and if you can find a laptop that has the same graphics card but with 1024 shaders, you can probably expect even more performance out of it.
