Specs overview
Starting off with the Intel representative, Core i7-8650U is part of the 8th generation Kaby Lake Refresh. Contrary to its direct predecessor – the Intel Core i7-6500U, it is now equipped with a total of 4 cores and 8 threads but retains the so-called Hyper-Threading technology, while also manufactured through the same 14nm production process with the same TDP of 15W. The processor ticks at 1.9 GHz while Turbo Boost frequencies are fairly high – 4.2 GHz. In addition, it supports dual-channel DDR4 memory modules with speeds up to 2400 MHz and incorporates the Intel UHD Graphics 620 graphics chip.
Moving on to its rival, the AMD Ryzen 7 2700U is part of the Zen architecture which means that the processor comes with enabled AMD SenseMI Technology. Build through a 14nm manufacturing process, the chip sports 4 cores, and 8 threads. You are also presented with 2.20 GHz base clock speeds and have a maximum boost clock of 3.80 GHz. In addition, the processor features up to dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory modules, while the incorporated graphics card is the integrated RX Vega 10.

For the purposes of this comparison, we have chosen to compare the performance of the two chips found in Dell Latitude 15 5590 and Acer Swift 3 (SF315-41) respectively. As you can see from the charts above, Intel Core i7-8650U outperforms its rival with around 8% when it comes to 3D rendering (tested with Cinebench 15). In addition, the latter manages to score 48% slower results in the Adobe Photoshop test. On top of that, the 8th gen Intel processor once again surpasses with 45% its opponent in our raw synthetic benchmarks (tested with Fritz).
Conclusion
Judging by the results both processors score in our benchmarks, Intel Core i7-8650U shows higher performance in 3 out of 3 tests compared to the AMD option, therefore it seems to be the better choice.
