Acer Aspire 3 (A315-59) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

If you’re looking for a new notebook, the first order of business is to establish a budget. Most of the time, the budget is rather on the low end, so we need good options in this sector. Manufacturers know that, so the field is very competitive, both in the gaming as well as daily driver markets. Today we have the Aspire 3 from Acer, which is trying to enter both, thanks to its low price and optional discrete graphics, which should give you a broader selection of games to play when you want to.

Today we’re presenting you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Acer Aspire 3 (A315-59).

Acer Aspire 3 (A315-59): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Acer Aspire 3 (A315-59)

1. Upgradeability

As any 15.6-inch laptop that’s worth its salt, the Aspire 3 comes with very good upgradeability, offering two SODIMM slots for DDR4 memory and two M.2 slots. Keep in mind that only the one on the right supports Gen 4 drives, so go ahead and save some money when you’ve finally decided to increase your storage.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and the SSD slots of the Aspire 3 (A315-59).

2. Input devices

The outside is looking good as well, as the keyboard and touchpad are great for the price. While the base is a bit flexy, it doesn’t take away from the long key travel and clicky feedback. The base also has enough space to house a NumPad, so accountants can be extra quick with the Excel spreadsheets. It lacks a backlight, which can be a bummer, so either have the lamps turned on or just finish your work in the early parts of the day. The touchpad is a positive surprise, as the surface is smooth and the responsiveness is fast.

3. Cooling and Performance

Cooled by only one heat pipe and one fan, you might think that the Core i5-1235U won’t do as well as its potential would suggest. However, the setup shows to be competent enough to possibly be able to handle a P-series CPU as well.

The Core i5 reaches 45W in the first 10 seconds of the stress test, going down to 40W for the next 20. In long runs, it still maintains 28W, while running at 70°C.

CPU benchmarks

As for the performance output of the laptop, it manages to battle with the ASUS Vivobook 15, a machine that we’d consider higher-end than the Aspire 3.

De resultaten zijn afkomstig van de Cinebench R23 CPU-test (hoe hoger de score, hoe beter)

Resultaten zijn van onze Photoshop benchmark test (hoe lager de score, hoe beter)

4. Display quality

While we really want every laptop to have a color-accurate panel with a wide gamut, we realize that this isn’t and won’t be the case for the foreseeable future. The Aspire 3’s panel is still pretty good even without full sRGB gamut coverage. It’s got a peak brightness of 291 nits as well as a 1620:1 contrast ratio, which puts means that at least the black colors appear deep and saturated. The panel covers 56% of the sRGB color gamut, while our Design and Gaming profile doesn’t help it that much when it comes to accuracy.

With the profile applied, we get a dE value of 3.2, while the stock settings deliver a dE value of 4.2. Here are the results of the accuracy test with the stock settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

1 reason NOT to buy the Acer Aspire 3 (A315-59)

1. I/O

The port selection of the device doesn’t fit 2022 or 2023 standards. We’re mainly saying this due to the lack of any Type-C ports, which are becoming the standard across all devices. Nevertheless, the laptop has three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
