HP Envy x360 13 (13-ay1000): Full Specs / In-depth Review

2 reasons to BUY HP Envy x360 13 (13-ay1000)

1. Design and input devices

The device is enveloped in aluminum, which looks spectacular, but doesn’t translate to a lot of structural integrity, as the body is quite prone to twists and flexing, which might be due to the thickness of the sheets. As for the design itself, the laptop has sharp edges and round corners, along with a 360-degree hinge on the lid, which also has an HP logo in the center. In terms of weight and height, the laptop weighs only 1.30 kg and has a profile of 16.51 mm.

The lid opens easily with one hand, revealing thin bezels, along with a keyboard with decent key travel, clicky feedback, and large keycaps, including half of the arrow keys. The touchpad isn’t the biggest out there but has amazing responsiveness and a smooth gliding experience.

2. Battery life

Despite carrying a 51Wh battery unit, the laptop delivers exceptional battery life, with the Ryzen CPUs showing their efficiency. In our tests, the laptop lasted for 11 hours and 18 minutes of Web browsing, or 9 hours and 20 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

3 reasons NOT to buy the HP Envy x360 13 (13-ay1000)

1. Upgradeability

The upgradeability is negatively impacted, which is the case with most 13-inch laptops that we review. There are up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM working in Dual-channel mode and a single M.2 PCIe x4 slot.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access the single M.2 slot, along with other stuff such as the battery and the cooling.

2. Display quality

There is a single display option with a 13.3-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution, and an IPS panel. The panel has comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 772 nits in the middle of the screen, 792 nits average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 15%, and a contrast ratio of 2800:1. The color coverage is great, with nearly full sRGB coverage.

The color accuracy wasn’t that great with the stock settings but improved significantly with our Design and Gaming profile. Here are the results with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

One caveat is the PWM, which this panel uses across all brightness levels, except for when the brightness is at its max setting and the SureView tech is disabled. This is totally preventable with our Health-Guard profile, but then you don’t get the color accuracy of the Design and Gaming profile.

Buy our profiles

Since our profiles are tailored for each individual display model, this article and its respective profile package are meant for HP Envy x360 13 (13-ay1000) configurations with 13.3″ IVO M133NVFC-R6 (IVO857E) (FHD, 1920 × 1080) IPS panel.

Office Work
