Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2022) – Top 5 Pros and Cons

The Legion 7 is hands down the most powerful gaming machine that Lenovo has to offer. It’s quite a bit different from the rest of the flagships that other brands offer, coming with an elegant and sleek approach to the design.

While it does use a lot of RGB, it still looks better than a lot of business and workstation devices. What is more important is what’s underneath it, as we see complete AMD domination with up to a Ryzen 9 6900HX and a Radeon RX 6850M XT, which ensures that the Legion 7 can take full advantage of AMD’s SmartShift tech to improve efficiency and performance.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2022).

    Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2022): Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2022)

    1. Design and build quality

The Legion 7 is entirely made from aluminum, resulting in a durable notebook with a premium feel. The lid does show a little bit of flex, but the base is exceptionally solid. In terms of dimensions, the laptop weighs 2.53 kg and has a profile of 19.4 mm, which is pretty thin. The chassis has a very appealing Silver color, which is also seen on the Legion 5. However, the Legion 7 has tons of RGB, both on the Legion logo on the lid, a strip on the bottom panel, as well as RGB hidden inside the heat vents.

The lid opens easily with one hand, revealing the base and the input devices. Starting with the keyboard, it brings a NumPad. All in all, it’s pretty similar to the ones found in the Legion 5 and 5 Pro, which means long key travel and clicky feedback. It’s also lit up with RGB. The touchpad has a nice size but uses glass instead of Mylar, which we see as an upgrade. It’s very smooth and accurate.

    2. Upgradeability

You can access all of the RAM and SSD storage on the laptop, thanks to two SODIMM RAM slots that fit DDR5 memory and the two SSD M.2 PCIe x4 slots, which support Gen 4 drives.

Here is our detailed teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and storage slots inside the Legion 7.

    3. Display quality

On the front, the laptop brings a 16:10 display with a QHD+ resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. The panel is excellent for productivity, gaming, and content creation. It does that by having high brightness of 470 nits, a very fast response time of 10ms, and 92% sRGB coverage.

The colors get very accurate with our Design and Gaming profile, bringing the dE value down to 1.3. Here you can compare the results of the screen with the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

    Health-Guard

The Legion 7 manages to hit the highest TDPs that we’ve seen from the Ryzen 7 6800H, so the cooling definitely works well. Temperatures are okay, but we don’t really see that big of an increase in clock speeds.

While this is the first time we test the RX 6850M XT, so we can’t really compare how well the Legion 7 takes advantage of it, we have to admire the 2.4 GHz clock speed that it runs at, as well as the full 140W TGP that it’s extracting.

    Gaming comfort

The laptop isn’t very loud even in the Extreme performance preset. However, the base does go above 48°C.

1 reason NOT to buy the Lenovo Legion 7 (16″, 2022)

    1. Battery life

Inside the laptop, you’ll find a massive 99.99Wh battery pack, which lasts for only 5 hours of Web browsing, or 5 hours and 33 minutes of video playback. This was unexpected, to say the least, but you have to factor in the high-res display and the powerful hardware inside. Still, we hoped SmartShift would be able to provide something more. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.
