HP ZBook Power G8: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP ZBook Power G8

1. Design and build quality

With a mostly aluminum body, the laptop is incredibly sturdy and rigid. We saw next to no flex from both the chassis and the lid. Despite that, the laptop weighs only 1.90 kg and has a profile of 22.8 mm. In terms of the design itself, we get a minimalist lid and base with flat lines, rounded corners, and sharp edges.

The lid has a debossed Z-logo and opens easily with one hand, revealing a matte display cover with slim bezels and a fantastic base setup. On top, we have a grill, which houses a pair of front-firing speakers. Below them, we see a great keyboard with decently long key travel and quiet, yet clicky feedback. It also comes with a backlight, a NumPad, and is spill-resistant, for the clumsier of us. The touchpad is accurate, has a large size, and has a good clicking mechanism, which tends to be a bit loud, however.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradability here is on point, with the laptop featuring two SODIMM slots, which can fit up to 64GB of RAM in total. In terms of storage, there are two M.2 PCIe slots, both of which have RAID support, while one of them can fit PCIe Gen 4 drives.

Here is our teardown video, which shows how to access both the RAM and SSD slots.

3. Display quality

The laptop comes with two display options, both with a 15.6-inch diagonal and an IPS panel. The first one is the one that we tested, coming with a Full HD resolution. The second display increases the resolution to 4K. The display that we tested showed comfortable viewing angles, a max brightness of 390 nits in the middle of the screen, 382 nits as an average for the whole area, with a maximum deviation of only 5%, and a contrast ratio of 1650:1.

As far as the color coverage is concerned, the panel covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut.

The display had good color accuracy with the factory settings, which improved significantly once we applied our Design and Gaming profile, which brought the dE value down to 0.8. Here are the results of our tests with both the factory settings (left) and with our profile applied (right).

Office Work

4. Battery life

With a battery size of 83Wh, the laptop delivers  8 hours and 28 minutes of Web browsing, and 13 hours and 31 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP ZBook Power G8

1. I/O

The laptop has wide I/O coverage, including Thunderbolt 4 support. However, it doesn’t bring a MicroSD card slot, which could be pretty important for some people. Other than that, the laptop brings three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, the aforementioned Thunderbolt 4 port, an optional Smart Card reader, an RJ-45 connector, an HDMI connector, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
