The Comet Lake SoCs are the most recent Intel newborns. They are power-efficient so you are not going to find them in high-end gaming laptops. Their place is in the ultraportable notebooks where they can reveal their strength – battery-friendly power draw, long hours of autonomous work, just 15W TDP, and the dissipated heat is on the low side. Today we will compare Intel Core i7-10710U and Intel Core i3-10110U. You can find them at very different price levels and you guess right, Intel Core i7-10710U powered notebooks are priced much higher compared to the Core i3-10110U ones.

Something to mention, the only difference between Comet Lake and Whiskey Lake is the memory frequency (DDR4-2666 vs 2400, respectively). The top model got 2 more cores, that’s all.

Specs overview

This comparison looks a bit like David versus Goliath but both SoCs are being used in the same series of notebooks and users need to know if it’s worth the bigger investment for the Core i7. Specs-wise they share some similarities. The TDP levels are the same (15W) and they can go up to 25W if the workload is demanding higher frequencies. The fabrication process and max memory support are the same for both – 14nm and 64GB DDR4-2666.

Intel Core i7-10710U has much more horsepower under the hood – 6 cores (12 threads), 1.10 GHz Base clock and whooping 4.70 GHz Boost. Core i3-10110U got nothing to hide, 2 cores (4 threads), 2.10 GHz Base clock and 4.10 GHz Boost. Pretty respectable numbers for a dual-core CPU but Core i7-10710U is in a league of its own. Conclusion

If you can afford Core i7-10710U you will get all of its goodies – higher core frequencies, more cache, and 6 cores. Core i7-10710U is a much better CPU in every aspect – multitasking is on another level compared to i3-10110U. But i3-10110U is a fair and honest offer and it will do the job for normal daily usage like MS Office, browsing, watching videos, and light games. Average Joe will appreciate that.
