Lenovo have introduced a new notebook in the business E-series. The E31 is a 13-inch notebook with a pretty sturdy build and great performance for its price. We got the device in our lab, so naturally, we decided to take it apart and see what what lurks inside while the full review is being prepared.

The notebook can be considered a part of the thin-and-light category at just 1.59 kg (3.51 lbs) and a thickness of 21.5 mm (0.85”). Inside we have an Intel Core i5-5200U CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 1TB HDD.

Removing the bottom cover

The whole disassembly is pretty easy and straightforward – there are 10 Torx screws you need to unscrew and then pry open the bottom cover. We recommend starting at the VGA port and working your way around the sides.

2.5” SSD drive, WLAN, RAM, Fans, Battery

Opening the bottom cover will give you access to all main components, including a slim 2.5” HDD/SSD compartment, WLAN card, and a single RAM slot that can hold up to 8GB memory. The cooling fan is a pretty big for the size of the notebook, so we expect some great results in our stress tests. The battery also takes a pretty big chunk of the internal space and we hope it offers long hours of uninterrupted work without the need for a charger.

If you are planning to take out components or do an upgrade, be sure to disconnect the battery first.

The battery is LG L14L2P22 (7.6V / 35Wh, 4400mAh)
The Wi-Fi card is Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Wireless AC + Bluetooth 4.0
The RAM chip is 2Rx8 Hynix 8GB DDR3-1600 (HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB, MEM-DR380L-HL02-SO16)
The HDD is Western Digital Slim WD10SPCX (1TB, 5400 rpm, SATA 6 Gbps)

The size of the HDD drive is 7 x 100 x 70 mm.

Unfortunately there is no M.2 slot for additional SSD storage.
