It is time to compare one of the latest U-series processors from AMD – the Ryzen 5 3500U to its predecessor – the Ryzen 5 2500U. Are they more different from what their names suggest and how they perform against one another?

Specs overview

The older processor of the bunch – the Ryzen 5 2500U is built on a 14nm Raven Ridge architecture, which utilizes between 15-25 W of power (the nominal TDP is 15W). On the contrary, the Ryzen 5 3500U is built on the newer 12nm Zen+ technology and while it is rated at the same 15W it provides the laptop manufacturers to configure it up to 35W. In addition to that, they use the same number of cores – four cores and eight threads, although the Zen+ Ryzen 5 3500U has 100 MHz more in its pockets, both in the Base and in its maximum Boost frequencies. By the way, they don’t only share the core number, but they are both equipped with 4MB of Cache, as well.

Still, on the train of similarities, they both support two channels of DDR4 memory with speeds of up to 2400 MHz. Not only that but they are equipped with the RX Vega 8 iGPU, although the Ryzen 5 3500U offers a 100MHz bump in its maximum clock speed.

We can see a marginal win by the Ryzen 5 3500U over its predecessor.

Conclusion

Well, while the benchmarks show only a slight increase in performance of the Ryzen 5 3500U against the Ryzen 5 2500U, we are expecting the overall difference to be bigger in real life. Since the newer Zen+ technology enables the former to use higher configurable power and should produce less heat because of the smaller size of its die.
