[Comparison] AMD Ryzen 5 5500U vs Ryzen 7 4700U – the Ryzen 5 5500U finally shows up, taking down its challenger
The next-gen U-series processors from AMD are here and while as of right now we only have the Ryzen 5 5500U with us we want to do as much as we can with it.
This includes comparisons (many of them) and today to challenge the Ryzen 5 5500U we have the top of the previous U-series generation: The Ryzen 7 4700U. While they share the same architecture, let’s see if the newer generation can punch above its weight and surprise us with its performance.
Today we are comparing the Ryzen 5 5500U against the Ryzen 7 4700U.

CPU benchmarks
In the 3D Rendering benchmark with Cinebench 20 the Ryzen 7 4700U performing 16% better. This might be due to the higher number of cores. However, in the Photoshop benchmark, which tests the CPUs’ 2D Rendering capabilities, the Ryzen 5 5500U finished the benchmark faster and had a lead of 0.16 seconds, which isn’t much, to be honest.

GPU benchmarks
Both CPUs come with the integrated Radeon RX Vega 7 (15W). However, the one inside the Ryzen 5 5500U was 12%, 63%, and 0.16% better in 3DMark Fire Strike, Unigine Heaven 4.0, and Unigine Superposition, respectively.

Conclusion
The Ryzen 5 5500U performed better than we expected, managing to snag up the win on the 2D Rendering benchmark while getting outclassed in Cinebench 20. The iGPU benchmark scores, however, truly surprised us, as we thought that since both processors come powered by the RX Vega 7, they will perform relatively similarly. However, the iGPU inside the Ryzen 5 5500U performed better across all of the GPU benchmarks, as well as having greater performance in the gaming tests.

The graphics results are expected as the 5500U also has a Vega 7 GPU (not Vega 6 as you state) and it is clocked at 1.8 GHz, 200 MHz higher than the 4700U GPU.
