An everyday device is what most people are looking for. They don’t need to have good gaming performance, although it is encouraged. A large percentage of consumers do menial tasks like just browsing the web or consuming media.

For that purpose, Acer has built the Aspire 5 (A517-52G), with the G standing for discrete graphics. However, don’t get too encouraged as we are talking about the MX series of GPUs, which haven’t been up to stuff, especially when considering that Intel’s own integrated solutions seem to be doing just fine.

1. Design and build quality

The notebook arrives with an aluminum lid and a plastic base and bottom panel. Its large 17-inch footprint is complimented well by the chassis rigidity. The exterior comes painted in silver and is graced by shaped edges and rounded corners. Branding-wise, there is an Acer logo in the center of the lid. The lid sadly doesn’t open with a single hand. In terms of weight and height, the device stops the scales at 2.60 kg and has a profile of 19.9 mm.

2. Upgradeability

The upgradeability isn’t perfect, but you can expand RAM and SSD storage, which is enough in our books. There is some soldered RAM, along with a single SODIMM slot. For storage, there is a single M.2 PCIe x4 slot, which is already full, along with enough space for a 2.5-inch SSD. Acer also gives you mounting hardware and SATA cables inside the box, so you can even do it yourself if you’re brave enough.

3. Battery life

With a medium-sized 54.6 Wh battery pack and the Tiger lake U-series processors, the laptop manages to deliver 10 hours and 20 minutes of Web browsing, or 6 hours and 44 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

4. Display quality

The 17.3-inch Full HD IPS display won’t win any awards, but it comes with everything you need for a good daily driver. The panel has comfortable viewing angles, ensuring that movies can be enjoyed by more people and not only you. There’s also no PWM across all brightness levels. Speaking of brightness, the panel caps out at 295 nits in the middle of the screen and 277 nits on average across the surface with a maximum deviation of 14%. The contrast ratio is good at 1180:1. Needless to say, color coverage and accuracy aren’t great, with the display covering only 53% of the sRGB gamut.
