Apollo Lake performs better and consumes less energy than Braswell
A few weeks ago we saw Intel announce its new mobile architecture – Apollo Lake. It will play a big part in future hybrids and tablets, entirely replacing SoCs, Braswell and Cherry Trail. The new Intel chips will feature Goldmont cores that will come with up to 30% increased performance. Despite this we expect decreased energy consumption with up to 15% which will increase battery life.
The latter will be hard to achieve as hybrid mobile devices grow more and more compact, leading to smaller battery size. This is namely the reason why the power consumption will be around 10 Watts. Despite all this, the chip will provide a Gen9 graphics core which is to be found in contemporary Skylake processors – this is how performance shall be preserved. Apollo Lake will be soldered directly to the motherboard, meaning that Intel will have greater control over the development and release dates of mobile CPUs.
The American company believes that smaller dimensions are a key factor for users. It is namely for this reason that the company will offer M.2 or EMCC SSD instead of conventional 2.5-inch devices that take up additional space. Furthermore, Apollo Lake CPUs will allow for smaller battery size – Intel promises that this change will not have a negative impact on device durability after a single charge. Additionally, the design of these new chips can be used on both mobile and AiO (All-in-One) devices. You can have a look at the image below – it displays how the new architecture will work without loss of quality.
