Not more than two years ago Intel announced a new type of storage, developed in partnership with Micron. Its name is 3D XPoint and the technology used in it allows for larger capacities of storage in smaller physical space, thanks to three-dimensional clustering of cells. The first device that will feature this kind of memory is called Optane SSD DC P4800X.

P4800X targets the business market segment or data centers, to be more precise. Intel claims that the product which uses this new technology has latency lower than 10 μs. In comparison, the latency of the fastest NAND SSD storage devices is around tens of μs. In combination with 550 000 read IOPs and 500 000 write IOPs, the Optane SSD DC P4800X will offer new opportunities in the realm of AI, machine self-teaching, medicine and cloud solutions.

For now, the only model offered by Intel has a capacity of 375 GB. The company claims that the 3D XPoint technology is indestructible, which means that the device can bear 30 full writings (375 GB x 30) in a single day. Considering the 3-year warranty, P4800X’s endurance can be 12.3 PB which is of paramount importance to data centers which will use the device at 100%.

Optane SSD DC P4800X will be offered in U.2 and PCIe variants, the price being around $1500 for the 375 GB product. Intel is preparing 750 GB and 1.5 TB versions but there is no info about their price yet.
