ASUS Zenbook 14 (UM3402) review – all-aluminum build and color-accurate 1600p display at an honest price

Verdict

If the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (UP3404) is too expensive for your needs, the Zenbook 14 (UM3402) is a great alternative that will not stretch your wallet too much. Still, it doesn’t come with transforming capabilities, and the powerful Intel Raptor Lake CPUs aren’t available as well. Aside from that, the laptop is a great bang for your bug and we’ll explain why.

The 14″ IPS display (PANDA LM140GF-2L01 (NCP0061)) has 515 cd/m2 maximal brightness, wide viewing angles, and a very good contrast ratio of 1550:1. Thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio, the screen is taller which is very useful for work and the 1600p unit offers a crisp and detailed image. The panel is suitable for color-sensitive tasks because the sRGB coverage is 99%. The display is a rough diamond when it comes to color accuracy. The base score out of the box is 4.6 but when you apply our “Design and Gaming” profile, the average dE value is enhanced to 0.7 value which is a tremendously good result!

Our machine is configured with an AMD Ryzen 5 7530U. This CPU isn’t a powerhouse but its performance is good for normal usage and office tasks. The cooling system seems modest, but the Ryzen 5 chips can maintain more than 3.0 GHz under 100% stress. That’s why this small laptop feels fast for Web browsing, watching videos, working with MS documents, or playing light games. The iGPU (Radeon RX Vega 7 (R4000/5000, 15W)) is still fast for light gaming – you can play CS:GO on Medium details with more than 80 FPS.

The comfort under load is on point unless the CPU isn’t pounded with a heavy load. Then, the cooling fan is noisy. In this scenario, the keyboard is warm, but not too hot, which is okay for normal usage. Speaking of which, the board is cozy for typing, the key travel is long, and the feedback is good. The touchpad is very large for such a compact base, it’s smooth and accurate. It also doubles as a virtual NumberPad that is great for calculations.

We spot bends and flexes here and there on the chassis but overall the rigidity is good. The I/O is wide enough for a thin device – three USB ports, an HDMI 2.1, and an SD Card reader. The upgrade options are the main cons of this laptop. The memory is soldered and the maximum amount of RAM is 16GB of LPDDR4X -4266MHz is dual-channel. There is just one M.2 Gen 3 slot. Of course, you can install a Gen 4 NVMe but its speed will be limited to the older standard.

The ASUS Zenbook 14 (UM3402) is a compact and light laptop with a metal build, snappy hardware under the bonnet, comfortable input devices, a color-accurate PWM-free 1600p display, and a long-lasting battery.
