HP ZBook Firefly 16 G9 review – great build quality but disappointing performance

Max CPU load
In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

Weirdly, the HP ZBook Firefly 16 G9 performs exceptionally badly in this test. Its power draw temporarily dropped to 12W, which is unacceptable. Just look at some of its competitors, which are significantly smaller devices. And considering the temperature of barely 55°C, we are pretty confident that some kind of software/firmware nonsense is going on on the inside.

Guess what? The situation with the GPU is the same. It has low clocks, a low board power draw, and an acceptable temperature.
Comfort during full load
On the bright side, the laptop is very quiet during long extreme workloads. Only gaming puts it through a little sweat, but nothing to fear. As you can see from the IR image below, the maximum temperature didn’t even manage to break the 40°C barrier.
Battery
Now, we conduct the battery tests with the Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with. Our unit features a 51Wh battery. It lasts for 10 hours and 11 minutes of Web browsing, or 8 hours and 3 minutes of video playback.
