Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14, Gen 8) review – the overall performance is great but the Zen 4 CPU gets hot in CPU-intensive tasks

Verdict

If you need a powerful compact multipurpose laptop, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14″, Gen 8) could be on your shortlist. It has a neutral clean design, an all-metal build and you can open the lid with one hand. Still, the overall rigidity isn’t great though. The input devices are comfortable. The keyboard is suitable for long typing sessions or gaming, and the touchpad is smooth and accurate.

The 14.5K OLED display (Samsung ATNA45AF02-0 (SDC4188) is a small gem. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio and an infinite contrast ratio. The display is suitable for gaming with its super-fast pixel response times. That’s not all – the panel covers fully the DCI-P3 gamut and its color accuracy can be enhanced to an average dE value of 1.8 with our “Design and Gaming” profile. The only downside of the screen is the PWM usage which is the main con of many other OLED units.

The device’s memory is soldered but that’s somehow expected given the low weight and the compact form factor. Luckily, the maximum amount of memory is 32GB of fast LPDDR5x memory and you get two M.2 slots for Gen 4 SSDs. The so-called Lenovo Legion ColdFront 5.0 thermal system isn’t that cold in CPU-intensive tasks. When the processor is under long 100% stress, its temperature is hitting 100°C.

Probably you’re not going to experience that during normal usage. For example, while playing games, the chip reaches just 65°C. Luckily, the cooling seems capable because the Ryzen 7 7840HS can maintain a stable 4.50 GHz in any kind of usage. Additionally, the two fans aren’t too loud. The optional GeForce RTX 4060 (Laptop) can maintain almost 2.50 GHz and 105W TGP. That’s why the device always feels responsive. By the way, the NVMe of our laptop shows some very good scores in the benchmarks.

The battery life is surprisingly good – more than 9 hours of either Web browsing or video playback. The I/O also seems modern with its HDMI 2.1, two Type-C ports, and a 4-in-1 Card reader. The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14″, Gen 8) is a compact yet powerful gaming device with a snappy OLED panel, comfortable keyboard, and up-to-date CPU and GPU options.

Do something prevents me to upgrade the sodimm slot with a 32GB stick? The PC does not detects more than 24GB of ram, does not starts or is possible to have it with 40GB of total system memory?

There are no SODIMM slots, only the soldered LPDDR5x-6400 memory, so it’s not upgradable. Or do you have the 16-inch variant which has two SODIMM slots?
