The HP Omen 15 and 16 from last year were pretty good but were still behind Lenovo’s Legion 5, mainly due to its lower TGP graphics. That led to less gaming performance, something quite important for a gaming laptop.

However, in 2022, all rules are off the table, as HP presents its Omen 16 (16-k0000), using Alder Lake H-series processors and high TGP graphics, including a 140W RTX 3060, which is just what the doctor ordered. So you get the hardware upgrade while keeping a lot of other stuff the same, precisely what needed to happen in our opinion, to put the Omen series back on track.

1. Metal chassis

The Omen 16 comes in with a fully aluminum base and bottom panel, while the lid feels plasticky. All in all, you get very little flex from the keyboard deck. We’ll talk about the lid a bit later, as it deserves some special attention. In terms of weight and height, the Omen 16 caps at 2.41 kg and 23 mm, respectively. The laptop takes a minimalist approach to the design, as the Teal emerald on the back is now black.

2. Display quality

The laptop offers three 16.1-inch displays, two of which have a high refresh rate. We got the FHD IPS 144Hz option. It has excellent viewing angles, a peak brightness of 408 nits, and a decent contrast ratio of 1060:1. The panel fully covers the sRGB gamut, while providing excellent accuracy both with the stock settings (left) and with our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

Here are the test results under the factory condition (left) and with our profile applied (right). While accuracy is good on its own, it gets even better, lowering the dE value down to 0.8.

The laptop has ample upgradeability options, with two SODIMM slots for DDR5 memory and two M.2 PCIe x4 slots that support Gen 4 SSDs.

4. I/O

The port selection comes with three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, one of which can charge other devices even if the laptop is turned off, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, an SD card reader, a LAN port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

1. Bouncy lid

Now, we have to talk about the lid. It’s made from a flimsy material, which resembles plastic. It’s not as rigid as the metal base, showing some flex when we try to twist it. The hinges aren’t very rigid, using a pillar design, with the part that moves being mounted at the lid portion. This means the bottom portion of the lid is quite strong, however, it wobbles and bounces with every touch. This is similar to what happens with the Victus 16, whose lid bounces like crazy as well.
