ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B monitor – Specs, Pros / Cons: Purely For Gaming

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B covers a decent chunk of colors, which is great for gaming. After all, while you need your games to run and feel smooth, it would be all for nothing if they look dull, limiting your enjoyment and experience. In terms of specs, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B offers classic gaming specs, with a 27-inch Full HD VA panel, which offers higher contrast but slightly lower peak brightness.

But, as most gaming rooms are dark anyway, that’s not gonna be a problem, unless your RGB lighting is too bright, in which case, dial it down lil’ bro. What’s more important is the 165Hz refresh rate and the 1ms response time, as well as the FreeSync Premium support.

At the end of the day, this is a budget gaming monitor, so we shouldn’t be judging it too harshly. However, that’s what we’re here to do regardless, as we take the VG27VH1B through our lab, and today we’re sharing the results with you, including how much improvement you can get from using our Display Profiles.

Design and Connectivity

The curved design that debuted first in 2014, is now available from many different brands and price ranges, including the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B, which currently retails for $179 on Amazon (link up top and in the Verdict below). For the price, you get a full plastic chassis, a cable channel in the stand, as well as Tilt and Swivel adjustments. In terms of ports, the monitor offers an HDMI 1.4 port, a VGA port, and an audio jack for your headset. There are built-in 2W stereo speakers, with the HDMI cable transferring the audio signal, so there’s no need for an additional audio cable.

Display quality, Buy our profiles, Verdict

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B brings a 27-inch Full HD screen (1920 x 1080), which calculates to a pixel density of 81.59 PPI, a pitch of 0.3113 x 0.3113 mm, and a Retina distance of 42.14 inches or 107 cm. From this distance, the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels.

The correlated color temperature on a white screen after a Factory Reset in sRGB mode is 7100 K (Luminance 150 cd/m2 at 20% Brightness). The average gamma value is 2.18.

Color coverage

Here’s an illustration (Fig. 1). The whole “sail-shaped” map below consists of all the colors we can see, while the black crooked line shows all the colors from real-world scenes and nature around us.

Then, we’ve drawn some of the most important and interesting color spaces, compared to the colors the panel of ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B can show:

Standard/For Web: sRGB – widely used color space for most consumer devices, ideal for Web design and development
For Print: AdobeRGB – used in professional photo editing, graphic design, and print
For Photographers/Video Editors: DCI-P3 – used in high-end film production, post-production, and digital cinema
Premium HDR: Rec.2020 – the widest consumer ITU color standard, covering a massive 75.8% of the visible spectrum, a benchmark for premium HDR content

ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B: the yellow dashed triangle (– – – – – –) represents the range of colors this monitor can display. In our tests, we calculated the total color coverage of the monitor at 99% of the sRGB color gamut and 86% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

(Fig.1) ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B covers 99% of the Web colors (sRGB)

This means that if the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B tries to show any color outside of its triangle, it will show the closest color to it that’s inside the triangle.

Color accuracy

Now let’s see how big is the difference between the real colors and the ones you’ll see on the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B. We measure that distance in DeltaE – the bigger the number, the more different they look.

For the next illustration, we’ve chosen 24 common colors like dark and light skin, blue sky, green grass, etc.

Values below 2.0 are considered suitable for color-sensitive work. Before our calibration of the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B, the Average color accuracy was 6.5 dE (Fig. 2), and with our Web Design and Office Work profile, it lowered to 5.7 dE (Fig. 3), which is a 14% increase in accuracy. However, the monitor is still very far away from being considered color-accurate for professional design work.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom-tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate (they may seem strange at first but after a few minutes our brain will start recognizing them as accurate ones – that’s how Health-Guard differs from alternatives like f.lux).

Pro Tip: As the Health-Guard profile simulates paper and has as accurate as possible colors, it could be a great tool for prepress designers!

Gaming and Movies

We also have a third Gaming and Movies profile, which regulates the black colors, making dark areas in games and movies appear more visible, thus giving you a better viewing experience. Shooting at your opponent first can be a make-or-break moment, so make sure you’re best prepared with our profile.

Office Work

Office Work should be used mostly by users who spend most of the time looking at pieces of text, tables or just surfing. This profile aims to deliver better distinctness and clarity by keeping a flat gamma curve (2.20), native color temperature and perceptually accurate colors.

Design and Gaming

This profile is aimed at designers who work with colors professionally, and for games and movies as well. Design and Gaming takes display panels to their limits, making them as accurate as possible in the sRGB IEC61966-2-1 standard for Web and HDTV, at white point D65.

Health-Guard

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Verdict

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VH1B is one gaming monitor that’s rather good at the gaming part, thanks to all of the features that you’re getting.

The color coverage is on point too, with 99% sRGB coverage and 86% DCI-P3 coverage. The problem is with the color accuracy, as our Web Design and Office Work profile isn’t able to provide any noticeable improvements, offering only a 14% increase in accuracy.

The rest of our profiles provide a clear impact, as the Gaming and Movies profile is able to stabilize the black colors, thus improving visibility in dimly lit scenes, be it games or movies.

The last of our profiles does the most important job. Of course, we’re talking about the Health-Guard, which reduces Blue Light and PWM (Flickering), thus giving you a more pleasant and healthy experience. Blue Light negatively affects your sleep, while PWM tires your eyes very quickly.
