[Comparison] AMD Ryzen 7 6800U vs Apple M1 – The M1 is far from done

Apple’s M1 SoC was a fantastic starting point for the Cupertino-based company, as it wanted to become more and more independent from Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA. It brings exceptional efficiency, while also performing well, both inside the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.

For the purpose of this comparison, we’ll be using the Pro, since we want to see the M1 at its full potential. Going back to the reason for this comparison, the Ryzen 7 6800U, is the new premier CPU from Team Red for smaller laptops, putting it in direct competition with the M1.

Today we’re comparing the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U against the Apple M1.

    CPU benchmarks

The Ryzen 7 is more powerful in both Cinebench 20 and Cinebench R23, scoring 118% and 3% higher. The large difference can be explained as the R23 benchmark is newer and takes better care of newer CPUs, including the M1 SoC.

    GPU benchmarks

The Ryzen CPU has a 12-core RDNA 2-based iGPU, while the M1 SoC relies on either an 8-core GPU. While a year older, the M1 still pulls ahead in 3DMark Wildlife Extreme, merely by 3%, but the lead is still there. We have to note how much AMD’s iGPUs have improved, as with it, now you can really play all sorts of games, including new releases, albeit on lower settings and lower framerates.

    Conclusion

The Apple M1 SoC is still a good option for people who want to get into the Apple Ecosystem or are just looking for an upgrade from an existing Apple device and want to spend as less money as possible. The M1-powered MacBook Air 13 and MacBook Pro 13 are some of the more affordable Apple laptops that you can get your hands on. On the other hand, the Ryzen 7 6800U feels pretty evenly matched, trading blows in many benchmarks, while being part of the more open Windows ecosystem.
