[Comparison] AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 vs Snapdragon X Elite – the New Ryzen Has an almost 2X More Powerful GPU in 3DM Time Spy

The CPU landscape in 2024 is looking super interesting, especially on the laptop front. What was previously a market serviced by only AMD and Intel, we’re now seeing Apple and Qualcomm get into the space. Apple has been going very strong with the M-series, delivering Pro and Max variants that bring tons of power to the MacBook Pro devices.

Qualcomm is just starting to get serious with laptops, thanks to the new Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite. These new players also made Intel and AMD step up their game, which is how we ended up with the Zen 5 Strix Point APUs, including the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. Today we’re having that brand new CPU go against the Snapdragon X Elite, to see if Qualcomm can stand up to the old guard.

You can find the full specs of both CPUs here: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 / Snapdragon X Elite

    Specs table

Both CPUs have the same amount of cores, however the Ryzen uses 2 threads per core, which is like eating with two hands rather than one. The Ryzen CPU also boosts a lot higher, up to 5.10 GHz. This is depending on the TDP, which can vary from 15 to 54W, while the X Elite runs at 23W. The AI component aka the NPU, is stronger on the Ryzen. However, in our opinion, you shouldn’t make a purchase decision based solely on the NPU, as it’s a side dish, rather than the main meal, despite how much importance everyone places on it.

    CPU benchmarks

Starting the CPU benchmarks with Cinebench 2024, the Snapdragon X Elite is 4% more powerful. Switching to Geekbench 6 Single and Multi core scores, a single Zen 5 core is 14% stronger than a single Oryon core. However, the 12 Oryon cores are 9% stronger than the 12 Zen5/5C cores.

    GPU benchmarks

Now, these chips also carry a GPU, with the Radeon 890M for the Ryzen and the Adreno for the X Elite. The Radeon 890M is 88% more powerful in the Time Spy (Graphics) test, while also being 5% more powerful in the Wild Life Extreme test.
