Intel Core i3-1005G1 vs Core i3-8145U – the Ice Lake one wins thanks to its GPU
It is time for Ice Lake vs Whiskey Lake and this time the smaller CPUs will fight for the heart and wallet of the budget buyer – Core i3-1005G1 and Core i3-8145U will show to us which one is better and why.
Quick Specs
Of course, we have two Core i3’s here so most of the specs will be close, but not all. Bulk prices of both CPUs are equal – $281.00 USD.
Let’s start with the similarities – 2-core / 4-thread CPUs with 4MB cache, and 64GB max memory size. The Ice Lake CPU has lower base and boost frequencies than i3-8145U (1.20 – 3.40 GHz vs 2.10 – 3.90 GHz). Also, the i3-1005G1 has better memory support with DDR4-3200, LPDDR4-3733 compared to DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133 for Core i3-8145U.
The newer CPU (i3-1005G1) has a bit higher TDP down value with 3W more – 13W to 10W, but nothing serious here.
Last, but not least, the i3-1005G1 is rocking the new Intel UHD Graphics G1 while i3-8145U is bundled with the well known Intel UHD 620.

Everything is clear
Yes, no need for hesitation here because the Core i3-1005G1 is the better one. The bulk prices of the tested CPUs are the same, the processor performance results are almost equal (ok, i3-8145U is 5% faster but no one will spot the difference), but the i3-1005G1s’ GPU is so much better – when you want to play some casual games they will run smoothly on Intel UHD Graphics G1 while the same games will struggle with Intel UHD 620. TDP values are almost neck and neck.
When the CPU performance is equivalent just get the processor with the better GPU – in our case, this is the Core i3-1005G1.
