Top 5 reasons to BUY or NOT to buy the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7

Here is the gold standard in mobile workstations. The ZBook series from HP brings uncompromised performance and great build quality.

The Fury 17 G7 is a big boy coming with 17.3-inch screens, which do come with good color coverage and accuracy, high TDP processors, and professional NVIDIA graphics. So far, we have some pretty standard stuff. However, the Fury has some crazy upgrade options, including four RAM slots, which is just insane.

Today we present you with LaptopMedia’s top 5 picks about the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7.

HP ZBook Fury 17 G7: Full Specs / In-depth Review

4 reasons to BUY the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7

1. Design and build quality

The laptop is built really well, featuring an all-metal construction, which is incredibly rigid and sturdy. With the use of metal for the laptop, the weight and height are decreased, as it stops the scales at 2.76 kg and has a profile of 26.9 mm, which are great numbers for a 17-inch workstation laptop that suffers from next to no flexing.

The lid opens easily with one hand, signifying smooth and well-balanced hinges. This reveals a great keyboard + touchpad combination, which offers long key travel, clicky feedback, spill-resistance, and a backlight. The touchpad is also one of the better ones that we have tested, coming with smooth gliding and accurate tracking, along with a set of dedicated physical buttons.

2. Upgradeability

A unique feature of this laptop is its upgradeability, as it has a total of four SODIMM RAM slots, which can support up to 128GB of DDR4 RAM. There is a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay, which with the appropriate mounts can house two M.2 PCIe x4 drives. Despite that, you get two more M.2 slots.

However, getting to them is more difficult than an ordinary laptop, since two of the SODIMM slots and one of the M.2 slots are below the keyboard, and you would have to pry it away to access them. Thankfully, we have done a detailed teardown, which shows exactly how to access all ports and slots on the device.

3. Display quality

The laptop comes with two display options, each with a diagonal of 17.3 inches, and IPS panels. They come with either Full HD or 4K resolution. Our laptop came with the 4K display and it showed comfortable viewing angles, a maximum brightness of 590 nits in the middle of the screen, 581 nits as an average for the entire area of the panel, and a maximum deviation of 5%. The contrast ratio is good – 1520:1. The panel fully covers both the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts, along with 93% of the AdobeRGB gamut.

Unfortunately, the color accuracy didn’t improve at all, despite the calibration with our Design and Gaming profile. Here are the results of our tests, using both the factory settings (left) and our Design and Gaming profile applied (right).

Office Work

4. Battery life

Keeping in mind the hardware inside, the 94Wh battery unit performs extremely well, lasting for  12 hours and 23 minutes of Web browsing, and 9 hours and 13 minutes of video playback. Now, we conduct the battery tests with Windows Better performance setting turned on, screen brightness adjusted to 120 nits, and all other programs turned off except for the one we are testing the notebook with.

1 reason NOT to buy the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7

1. The choice of hardware

With the G8 ZBook laptops being inbound any day now, already getting announced in June, buying this laptop now isn’t a wise choice at all. Once the new laptop hits the market, the old one will go down in price, to make room for the new one, which will bring Tiger Lake to this already awesome package.

Despite that, this laptop still brings decent performance, both in the CPU and GPU fields. Here are some performance benchmarks against some competitors.
