[Comparison] AMD Ryzen 5 4500U crushes last year’s flagship AMD Ryzen 7 3700U with up to 180% better performance

AMD has been the underdog in the CPU market for quite some years now. But with the release of their Ryzen series they’ve taken the market in their hands and proven that they are worthy competition of Intel. Today, we’ll compare two AMD processors designed for laptops. We have the new mid-range Ryzen 5 4500U and last year’s flagship Ryzen 7 3700U.

In the next sections, we are going to see how these chips compare to one another so that you can make the right choice for your system.

More detailed specs here – AMD Ryzen 5 4500U / AMD Ryzen 7 3700U

Specs

Firstly, for the younger Ryzen 5 4500U. The CPU was released in the middle of 2020. It has two more cores than its older sibling so the core count rises to 6. However, it also has 6 threads – 2 less than the 3700U. The base clock speed and the max clock speed are at the same spot at 2.3GHz and 4.0GHz respectively. Ryzen 5 4500U has 8MB of cache and supports memory speeds up to 3200MHz. The GPU works at 1500MHz but it offers 6 cores whereas the 3700U offers 10 cores.

Now, let’s continue with the slightly older Ryzen 7 3700U. This CPU was released in Q1 2019. It has four CPU cores with 8 threads. The base clock speed is at 2.3GHz with the max boost clock going all the way to 4.0GHz. It has a 4MB cache and it supports up to 2400MHz DDR4 memory. The integrated GPU works at 1400MHz.

CPU Benchmarks

In the CPU benchmarks, the Ryzen 5 outperforms the Ryzen 7 by a considerable margin. In our Photoshop rendering benchmark the 4500U is almost two times faster than its older sibling.

Results are from the Cinebench 20 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

GPU Performance

In the GPU department, the younger of the two CPUs scores better again. Most of the benchmarks show at least 40% better performance with the Ryzen 5 4500U compared to the 3700U.

Results are from the 3DMark: Time Spy (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)

Results are from the 3DMark: Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark (higher the score, the better)
