[2019] LaptopMedia’s Golden Laptop Award – Best GeForce RTX 2070 notebooks

If you want a really fast laptop with a great GPU inside but you don’t want to spend too much money on it, the logical choice is called NVIDIA RTX 2070. This graphics card has enough power to handle every modern game on Ultra settings with high FPS. It’s suitable for high-refresh-rate monitors without sacrificing the visual quality or maybe just a little in some really heavy tittles.

The big amount of GPU power comes from the TU106 chip that has 2034 shader units, 64 ROPs, 1215 MHz/1440 MHz base and boost clocks, 1200 MHz memory frequency, 8GB GDDR6 memory, 256-bit memory bus, and 115W TGP. Looks impressive and it really is. The RTX 2070-based laptops are the smart choice when it comes to price/performance ratio in the high-end segment.

Now, let’s move on to the “main event” of this article. This year we have the pleasure to test a lot of laptops equipped with the blazing-fast TU106 GPU. Of course, the performance is always there no matter the machine, but some of them stand out next to the others. That’s why we picked the best three RTX 2070-based notebooks by our opinion based on our in-depth reviews.

It’s time for some action.

#3 Our bronze medalist – ASUS ROG Strix GL704

The bronze medal is for the ASUS ROG Strix GL704. It’s really hard to combine a full-blown RTX 2070 with acceptable weight and good cooling – but ASUS did it. The weight is 2.90 kg and we have a 24.9mm profile – not bad for a 17.3-incher.

The cooling of this device can maintain high frequencies no matter the load thanks to the five heat pipes. Two of them are shared between the CPU and GPU, there are two more that are dedicated to the graphics card and the processor, and one pipe cools the GPU regulators and the video memory.

The upgradability of this laptop is decent. It has two RAM DIMMs, the maximum supported memory size is 32GB. There is an M.2 slot that supports NVMe SSDs and a SATA connector too.

The 144Hz blazing-fast screen (AUO B173HAN04.0) guarantees smooth gameplay in every game, especially when it’s combined with the RTX 2070. The viewing angles of this panel are superb, the contrast ratio is a good one – 1000:1 (800:1 after profiling), and this display covers 92% of the sRGB which is a great score.

The I/O of this device rich on ports – it has an SD card slot too which is rare to find in the most gaming devices. Last but not least – the keyboard. It has transparent WASD keys, good key travel with nice tactile feedback, and with the “N-key rollover” tech you can press several keys at the same time. The keyboard has two layout options to choose from – SCAR II and HERO II. The RGB lights of this device are controlled by a dedicated app.

That’s enough for a bronze medal.

#2 Our silver medalist – HP Omen 17 2019

The HP Omen 17 2019 is our silver medalist. This notebook has a great aggressive gaming look combined with thin bezels – a nice combo. One of the main advantages of this machine is its really effective cooling. It has four heat pipes and two cooling plates (for the CPU and GPU) beneath them and it does a great job. The cooling fans are huge and they provide big amount of airflow.

No matter the stress, this laptop will always be cool and quiet. You can enjoy your favorite games without hearing intrusive noise from ramped fans. Let’s see our table for a more clear picture of the temperatures.

Average core temperature (base frequency + X); CPU temp.

Core i7-9750H (45W TDP)0:02 – 0:10 sec0:15 – 0:30 sec10:00 – 15:00 min
HP Omen 17 20193.44 GHz (B+32%)@ 86°C2.74 GHz (B+5%)@ 71°C2.67 GHz (B+3%)@ 71°C

That’s right, no one “can’t touch this” kind of temperatures and noise level, only HP Omen 17 2019 can – this laptop is in its own league here.

The keyboard of this Omen device is rather pleasant with long key travel and tactile feedback. Additionally, it has six programmable keys that can be mapped by your own preferences and needs. There is a quad-zone RGB backlight and the WASD keys have a different color scheme – good idea.

The screen (CMN175D) of this thing is very good. It has 98% of sRGB coverage, a very good contrast ratio (1500:1), and great viewing angles. Its average dE is below 2.0 and after profiling, the score is an impressive value of 0.7 average dE. The panel is also PWM-free so you can use it for long hours of gaming – combined with the very little noise and the cool internals the overall experience will be astonishing.

The upgrade options are another strong side of this device – two RAM DIMM that supports up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, two M.2 PCIe x4 slots with RAID 0 and Optane H10 support!

#1 LaptopMedia’s Golden Laptop goes to the MSI GE75 Raider

It’s time for our gold medalist – the MSI GE75 Raider. This laptop has a good known and great looking MSI design. The superb SteelSeries keyboard is on board too with tactile feedback and long key travel and it’s comfortable for both typing and gaming. The per-key RGB backlight can be controlled by a dedicated app. There are additional buttons for the SteelSeries app and for the cooling – with a touch of a button you can ramp the fans at max speed if you need better temperatures. That will lead to higher CPU and GPU frequencies, and a bit better FPS results.

Speaking of the cooling solution – it’s a great one with eight heat pipes and two big cooling plates for the CPU and GPU. Let’s say it again – 8 heat pipes!

The screen of this machine (N173HCE-G33 CMN175C) is great. It has comfortable viewing angles, decent contrast ratio, and it covers 95% of the sRGB.

So, a quick summarize – superb cooling solution, a SteelSeries keyboard with per-key RGB backlight, a dedicated fan boost button, and a good screen. That’s enough for our gold medal.

Congratulations MSI, the GE75 Raider is a really great gaming device!
