HP Victus 16 (16-r0000) review – has potent cooling and color-accurate display

Verdict

The HP Victus 16 (16-r0000) is a nice surprise. The laptop isn’t super expensive but at the same time, its performance is definitely good. Sure, it’s not a flagship killer but all the games that we tested can be played with maxed-out visual and high FPS.

The lower price compared to the Omen series is possible due to some sacrifices like the build quality. Here, the lid can’t be opened with a single hand and it’s flexible while the base is solid if we don’t count two zones around the right palm rest area.

The device can be configured with powerful Intel Raptor Lake H or HX CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 4000 GPUs. The good news is that the cooling can handle the powerful internal so the laptop is fast no matter the load. In our case, the processor can maintain very high P and E core clocks as well as around 115W power limit in short and medium loads. In prolonged periods of 100% CPU stress, the chip can reach a 67W limit and good E cores clock. The P cores frequency isn’t that high in this scenario but the gaming performance is still very good.

Speaking of gaming, because of the potent cooling system, the GeForce RTX 4070 (Laptop, 120W) can offer stable core clocks and 107W TGP, so there is a bit of room left for overclocking. The Full HD IPS display (BOE BOE0B9E) is certainly suitable for gaming needs. It has a 144Hz frequency and a fast pixel response time of 8.6 ms. The panel is suitable even for professional color-related work because of the 100% sRGB coverage and thanks to our “Gaming and Web design” profile, the color accuracy reaches an average dE value of just 1.0 – great! The panel is PWM-free.

The fans are noisy in “Performance” mode but if you don’t play super demanding games, you can lower the noise by switching to “Balanced” or “Eco” mode. By the way, there is an option in the BIOS that can turn off the fans completely in light loads so the laptop can be dead silent while browsing the Web.

Still, the I/O selection is kind of okay but here we have just 5 Gbps ports, including the Type-C one which doesn’t sound that modern in 2023. Aside from that, the HP Victus 16 (16-r0000) is a surprisingly good gaming laptop. It has a fast color-accurate display, potent cooling, and powerful hardware under the bonnet. This makes the device a good choice for people who need a gaming machine that will not stretch their wallet too much.
