Not long ago we were wondering about the Ryzen 5000-series processors and how good they would be. Now we have the new U-series chips here and we can’t wait to show you how well they perform. For today we have one of the new mid-range chips, the Ryzen 5 5500U, and the best way to see how good it is is to compare it to its predecessor, the Ryzen 5 4500U.

You should expect more comparisons of the new Ryzen 5 5500U, but for the first one, we believe that the Ryzen 5 4500U was the perfect opponent.

CPU benchmarks

In the 3D Rendering benchmark with Cinebench 20, the Ryzen 5 5500U was just slightly faster, managing to score 3% higher. The same story repeated itself in the Adobe Photoshop benchmark is where Ryzen 5 5500U was faster once again and completed the test with a lead of around 0.4 seconds, which isn’t much but it’s there.

GPU benchmarks

Moving over to the GPU side, here the Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 5 4500U are powered by the RX Vega 7 and RX Vega 6, respectively. As you can guess by the name, the RX Vega 7, which has more cores and higher clock speed, performed 13% better in 3DMark Fire Strike, 55% better in Unigine Heaven 4.0, and 9% better in Unigine Superposition.

Conclusion

In terms of computational power, the Ryzen 5500U didn’t show much in the 3D Rendering benchmarks, managing to win against its predecessor, albeit by performing just 3% better. In Photoshop we saw similar results as the Ryzen 5 5500U finished the benchmark faster and had a lead of around 0.4 seconds. As for the graphics part of this comparison, the Radeon RX Vega 7 that was inside the Ryzen 5 5500U was significantly quicker with a lead of 13%, 55%, and 9% in 3DMark Fire Strike, Unigine Heaven 4.0, and Unigine Superposition, respectively.
