Acer Aspire V15 (Black Edition) vs ASUS ROG G501: Detailed ‘Stability and Temperature’ battle report

Aspire V15 and ROG G501 are maybe the most popular gaming machines on the market now, and a lot of users are greatly wondering which one they should choose.

Given their thin bodies and high-performance components, it’s really interesting to see how their cooling systems manage to chill those main components, so we’re going to put them to some torture tests.

We’re starting with 100% CPU load, and in order to simulate a heavy computing process, we measure the CPU condition after just 30 seconds. Aspire V15’s cores reached 96°C or just 4 degrees below the Tj.max value (and if that limit is reached your system would turn off in order to prevent hardware issues). G501’s cores work at up to 75°C and don’t even have the necessity for throttling (the green/red line at the bottom).

10 minutes later, the average temperature of Aspire V15’s CPU is 83.7 – 92.1°C and the mean frequency is 2.91GHz. G501’s average CPU temp is 78.3 – 80.2°C and the mean frequency is 3.08GHz.

At the 45th-minute mark, the max reached throttling is almost identical – 25% for V15 and 24% for G501. The average CPU temp for V15 is 85.3 – 93.5°C (@2.80 GHz) and for G501 it is 81.0 – 82.2°C (@2.88 GHz).

At that point, we run a short GPU benchmark (keeping the CPU torture active) and that is the moment when Aspire V15 surpasses its competitor – you can see the results below.

After one hour, we added 100% GPU to the maximum CPU load and left things like that for an additional 60 minutes. This is a real burden for the notebooks, but they didn’t disappoint.

Although the Aspire V15 GPU temperatures remained relatively high (88°C), the laptop got us 34 frames per second at average. G501’s GPU runs at 78°C, but its average FPS is 30.

I dont know….everybody recommends me to run away from acer due to its bad reliability fame…

I think reliability is a big thing in laptop as powerful as theses omw with such thin body

Interesting results, i’m still curious on how the Acer V nitro 17′ ׂwill handle the heat (can’t seem to find any reviews on the the refreshed acer aspire v17 960m version anywhere).

A full review of the Acer Aspire V17 (VN7-791G) review is coming really soon. It features the GTX 860M GPU, but I am sure that the temperature difference between last year’s model and this year’s variant will not be of a key importance. That’s because we already tested the Y50 (GTX 960M) and Acer Aspire V15 (GTX 960M) and temperatures were roughly the same as their predecessors. Stay tuned. (:

There’s an Acer v15 Nitro BlaCk Edition on sale for $899 on newegg and it has 4GB GDDR5 NVIDIA 960M..
