[Comparison] MSI GE66 Raider (2020) vs GE65 Raider 9SE/SF (2019) – what’s new?

Is that a Titan? It’s really inconvenient to start our article about the MSI GE66 Raider with a question but the design has so many common details with the MSI Titan series. Apart from the first impressions, the GE66 Raider looks like a real next-gen gaming device – slim, light, powerful, and beautiful.

The (older) GE65 is still a decent machine with SteelSeries keyboard, strong Coffee Lake CPUs like i9-9880H, up to 240Hz panels, and good NVIDIA Turing-based GPUs like the full-blown RTX 2070. Well, if the current GE65 isn’t enough for your gaming needs, maybe the “Raider on steroid” will impress you more because it has a lot of tricks (hardware) up in its sleeve.

Let’s see what the new beast has to offer.

Design: Titan to the bone

Look at the back, the lid, look at it from all angles – it’s a small MSI Titan a.k.a. GE66. There is an RGB bar at the front edge of the body. It looks good and it’s not intrusive. There will be limited edition devices with custom skins made by Colie Wertz (computer graphics artist).

Hardware – a lot of unknown specs

10th Gen Intel Core H (including Core i9 CPUs) will be available for the GE66 configurations (those are still unreleased CPUs). As for the GPUs – GE66 will take advantage of the lastest RTX Turing video cards but it’s still unclear what the GPU models will be. The notebooks will be released later this year so perhaps there is a chance that those “latest” RTX video cards to be the unreleased mobile RTX SUPER GPUs.

The I/O – nothing unusual

The ports of the GE66 Raider are the usual ones for a machine of this class – an HDMI, two USB Type-C, three USB 3.1 (Type-A), a Mini DisplayPort, an Ethernet port, an SD card reader, and an audio jack.

Display – a 300Hz IPS panel is coming

Yes, you read it correctly – there will be an optional blazing fast 300 Hz IPS panel for the hardcore gamers. This will be (probably) an expensive option. We don’t have enough info for the other panel variants, at least for now.

Other specs – 99.9Wh battery and more

A 99.9Wh battery unit will be available – that’s a huge capacity but the 300Hz panel will drain it fast, so it’s nice (or must) to have a big battery in a laptop with a high refresh rate display. Two DIMM slots are available and two M.2 ports as well.
