AMD making its first steps into wireless VR technology
The second quarter of 2017 has just begun but the year is already looking fantastic for AMD. The tech giant got back in the game with its Ryzen processors and it seems that it is looking to expand its business elsewhere. This particular time we are talking about the world of VR technology.
Last year AMD released its RX 480 graphics card that is VR-capable and the next-gen Vega cards are about to launch so the company can provide enough computing power to run stunning VR visuals but what is VR without a headset? AMD has apparently thought of this question and the answer it came up with is to start manufacturing its own VR hardware. To do so AMD acquired Nitero – a startup company developing wireless VR technology.
The engineers at Nitero are now working on wireless IP (intellectual property) for AMD to create a wireless VR headset. What’s special about it is the fact that they are one of the few companies currently producing 60 GHz wireless transceivers. 60 GHz wireless (unofficially 802.11ad) can deliver up to 7 Gbit/s data rates. The promised high bandwidth and fidelity and low latency should allow for transferring high-resolution VR content without a cord.
Unwieldly headset cables remain a significant barrier to drive widespread adoption of virtual reality. Our newly acquired wireless VR technology is focused on solving this challenge, and is another example of AMD making long-term technology investments to develop high-performance computing and graphics technologies that can create more immersive computing experiences.
Says Mark Papermaster, AMD Chief Technology Officer.
Of course, we don’t know when we can expect wireless VR headsets from AMD but it’s good to know that they are in the works.
