The new AMD Ryzen Renoir vs Intel Ice Lake – here’s what to expect

The AMD Renoir architecture isn’t that far from its debut and the rumors are starting to grow. Those APUs will find their place in almost every category – from ultraportable devices to regular notebooks.

You can check out all available AMD laptops on the market in our Specs System: https://laptopmedia.com/specs/?q=AMD&hPP=20&idx=laptops&p=0&is_v=1

Reddit’s user “_rogame” informs that the next-gen APUs will be divided into four different categories, two of them are targeted in the mobile segment – 15W (ultraportable devices) and 45W (mainstream notebooks).

The user even shared some of the IDs of the upcoming APUs. For example, here are the top-end rumored mobile APUs.

    AMD Renoir for mainstream laptops

The 45W one is Renoir NB Ryzen 9 B12 (revision 1636_REV_C5) with Renoir Graphics C5 that has 12 or 13 CUs (CU stands for compute units).

    AMD Renoir for Ultra-thin laptops

The most efficient one will be the 15W variant – Renoir Ryzen 9 B12 (revision 1636_REV_C1) with Renoir Graphics C1 (12 or 13 CUs).

AMD Renoir vs Intel Ice Lake

Here is some info about the IDs – RV Bxx stands for “Radeon Vega” and Bxx is for the iGPU variant. The B12 will be the high-end version (12-13 CUs), and then one step down for every version – B10 (10-11 CUs), B8 (8-9 CUs), B6 (6 CUs), and B4 with 3-4 CUs. The B12 will be for the mobile segment only.

Probably, the 15W ones will be direct competitors to Intel’s Ice Lake CPUs equipped with Iris G7/G4 and UHD G1 iGPUs.

The new APUs will probably combine CPU cores from “Zen 2” architecture alongside iGPUs that will (again – probably) a mixed bag of Vega and Navi iGPU tech. We can expect those new APUs in Q1 2020 (still unconfirmed).

I’m guessing AMD has closed the gap to Intel with better efficiency and performance while still being cheaper. However, Intel is still slightly more frugal with power usage. Also, Intel’s top CPU is still the one with the most performance.
